Observations after a week of practice

It’s 2025, year four under Mario, with a portal that speeds everything up and a crazy NIL budget. Skip steps? What are we even talking about? Last year was a colossal failure because our defense was the worst I’ve ever seen in my lifetime with a championship offense.

Going into Spring, the defensive line and linebacker room haven’t upgraded and we still don’t even know who’s playing safety. Miss me with those excuses and low standards.
You don’t know what the d-line will be. Has Scott played a game in year 2? Has Horton? Have we seen blay with a Miami uniform? As far as LB we don’t know who is going to emerge in this system or who will be in the portal. Safety we know poyser will be one.

It’s not excuses and low standards. It’s facts and reality. Yes it takes steps even with the portal. You can go out and try to quick fix it like fsu did and now look where they are at. Y’all dudes do this shít to yourselves every year for the last 20+ at some point you would think you have learned

4 years in and 3 DCs

A wise poster once said Mario brings no advantage coaching wise so he has to hire homerun coordinators

Not sure where Dawson stands. I like him a lot but he’s gonna definitely earn it this year

Heatherman? We just gotta hope beyond all hope he’s that homerun
Mario is about to kill the QB killa narrative while creating a new one being the Defense killa. I just don’t understand how this staff thinks we have enough. It’s pure insanity.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest our DL will be our strength. None. Your best argument is Bain and we don’t know what to expect from him. Blay played at LA Tech, we know what he is. Your argument about those young guys and LB’s literally prove my point. Lol.

Let me remind everyone, this staff thought Emory (I drank the kool aide too) was the future before the bowl game. They thought they had the right talent on defense but weren’t able to execute. Forgive me if my confidence on their evaluations, particularly in defense, isn’t there.

It is excuses and low standards. The budget on this team proves my point. It doesn’t take that many steps with the portal if you’re doing it right. Look at Oregon, Texas, OSU, etc. Given our history with Mario in that department, we miss way more than we hit when we are being cheap.

This is classic CIS talk I’ll never understand. Good luck with those hopes and dreams. Im sure it’ll work out for us..

One of the most stunning heel turns of all time.

There’s no way this defensive staff thinks we have enough on defense. A Safety, LB, and a DT has to be priorities in the Spring Portal

If you can’t get what you need in the winter portal, spring portal becomes your last resort.

You have a point, but I think ur point on the DLine is a little pessimistic. Alston, Baron, Clark, Barrow are the 4 main guys that left and produced last season. Only Barrow produced at a level above average, everybody else production can be replace easily, if they recruited right. Ik a lot of the DL hasn’t played yet, but if I had to project, the DE position is def better than last season. The question is on the DT position, whose replacing Barrow’s production and giving u more, and who is replacing Clark’s production and giving u more.

We really don't have any freaks at DE.

We have unproven freshmen/sophomores and tweeners(too small for DT, too big for DE) who've already peaked.

We seriously need monsters at DE. Like what Ohio State had this year. Guys who will play in the NFL.
I agree with the overall point but osu edges were mediocre this year. Their DTs is what we should want

None of our defensive ends outside of Bain and Messidor has ever started for Miami.

I think you need to see some of the younger guys actually play before just claiming they’d never started at Oregon or Georgia. I’m 100% positive any of those teams would take Armando Blount. Malik Bryant was also offered by Alabama.
I’m pretty sure schools like Oregon and Georgia would take Lowe also, dude is going to be a beast. If you look at our line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball now compared to where it was under previous regimes it’s like night and day. Keep in mind, we’ve been able to do so without even showing great success on the field so far. If this team does what we hope this year(win the conference and deep playoff run) the floodgates will open even more with recruiting.

The scheme alone will make this DL miles better than last year. Anyone with a brain can see we have talent but they weren't playing in a system that showcases that. This will be a much different D this year whether the doubters believe or not.

Do I think we still need pieces. Of course I do but this D is going to be much better.

It's very clear that this staff does not think they have enough, Mario has stated himself in an interview that they will be active in the spring portal. Mario has also publicly stated that not having enough at DB last season was on him. They went after every slot and 6-4 + WR under the sun during the winter portal, they just didn't have the QB in place yet. Let it all play out, I'm almost wiling to bet this staff will bring in 5-6 players in the spring portal.

i personally think the D line talent is enough to win
talent is about relativity, and compare our roster to the rest of the ACC, no team is close except maybe clemson and on paper were still far superior then them
i expect a Dno to Diaz type of change in our defense
maybe im a homer but i think our talent is more than enough to win the ACC and get to the playoffs
just need to have coaches that will put the players in a position to succeed and actually have them ready and not confused on a play to play basis

Spence was such a beast. The last true Miami LB we have had including Shaq. The way he played, the speed he played with, the way he looked on the field, everything about him was what you think of when you think of a Miami LB.

Yep, been a long time since we've had a LB that played like that.

I think there is evidence. Rueben Bain when healthy has proof he can be dominant. Even last year he made plays coming back from that hamstring injury, and he was fat. Ahkeem Mesidor made all ACC as a DE in 2022. He had 38 tackles/10.5 TFL/7 sacks. He got hurt missed most of 2023, then played 3T alot last year until they benched Barron and moved Mesidor back outside. He then proceeded to start at DE last 3 games where he had 12 tackles/3 TFL/2 sacks to close out the season.

Who cares where Blay played? He has a draftable grade as a DT on him right now. He is 6'4 304 pounds and is athletic. He was a first team DT and highly productive. He would be in mix to start at Penn State as a DT if he didn't choose Miami. Justin Scott is a 5-star talent that has added weight and strength. Moten took a big step last season, and I think has a strong season as a senior as he has gotten better every season he has been here.

There is zero proof the staff thought Emory was the "Answer" at QB. The word was they liked him, but nothing suggested they weren't going to go portaling for a QB. In fact, @DMoney hinted they would all season. Where do you come up with this nonsense?

It doesn't take many steps? but you compare us to Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas?

Those 3 I think had the most expensive rosters in college football last season. They also have been much better and established over the last 20 years than Miami.

Miami has a healthy NIL, but I don't think they will ever spend or have the ability to spend what the above 3 will for a roster.

Agreed. I am just sharing what a current staff member told me in December about last year’s defense which was alarming.

I predicted we would be active in spring because we lack playmakers. They need to be aggressive (not cheap) and working behind the scenes. This defense needs to be fixed and start winning us games.
