UM botched this situation by letting Gamble go.

You can't win with this logic. If Gamble isn't a take you don't take him just to get another recruit.

Especially if it's just to have a decent shot at another recruit. You might wind up with Gamble, who is a guy you don't want, and Davis still goes elsewhere.

Just keep recruiting guys and sign the best that want to be here. If you can't get Davis, then get someone better.

You don't get in a pickle with the guys who get away. You get into trouble when you sign too many guys who can't play. The great Butch David even lost guys he wanted to UF and FSU. He succeeded because he managed to sign other guys who could play as well or better than the guys he lost.
