Note on Jalil Bethea

Question for you, @Peter Ariz .

When you look at the language 247 (and others) use, you'll see certain basketball players "sign" and then "decommit". On a comparative basis, I'd say that football players who sign in December tend to enroll in January in much higher numbers.

So what accounts for such an "early" basketball signing when there is such a delay in enrollment? Is the basketball LoI "easier" to get out of, or will schools just routinely allow a player out? Or was the Able decommit permitted due to a head coaching change?

And on a slighly separate note, can basketball players "graduate early" from high school and then enroll in January, with full eligibility? Maybe it's happened, but it doesn't seem nearly as common as what happens in football.

Appreciate you!
I don't pay attention but honestly basketball commitments seem very secure typically (like very little flip-flopping) UNTIL after NSD lol. Like I swear you see people decommit after they sign more often than you see them flip or something prior to signing. But maybe it's just cause I don't pay any attention really. But yeah the signing seems like it's worth far less than football signings.

Basketball definitely has a much lower decommit/flip rate. I don’t know the stats regarding post-signing flips, but I’d imagine it’s mainly just that they stick out more because there are so few decommits on the whole.

I havent seen a kid get pancaked on every single screen set on him like Bethea. He just wants to shoot that 20 footer or fly in an errant layup attempt. He has a LONG way to go if he comes back.

I could do without Jalil. He has talent, but attitude matters and his stinks. Do you realize how much of a *ss*hole you have to be for someone like Coach L to give up on dealing with you? The rumors we heard about him coming in were proven to be accurate as all ****, and it didn't even take long for him to show that he has serious maturity issues. If he consistently challenged an experienced, successful veteran coach, he will likely try a first time HC.

There are far too many mature, coachable, talented adults out there in the portal, for Miami to put up with that kind of nonsense. Maybe Bethea having to humble himself at a midmajor or a lower tier P4 program is what he needs to go through.

Wooga was cheeks his first year as well.
Wooga was COACHABLE his first year. Wooga accepted a role and made the most of it. The issue is that with the money and whatnot, Wooga changed. It's sad, but he let the NIL situation affect his thoughts on the team and the staff that was committed to helping him develop. Combine that with injuries, and it got toxic. He's now at a Nova program where he's putting up numbers, but not winning anything.

Hot take: Jalil can't beat anybody off the dribble and he doesn't appear willing or able to be a floor spacing role player. If you don't do either of those things as a guard, you can't play, period.

This is Timberlake 2.0, the only role he's qualified for is 'best player on the team,' and he isn't good enough to be that here. He's going to wind up killing it at a small school in 3 years, but it won't work at this level.

Agreed. Just saying that you can look unplayable 1 year and draftable the next. Jalil has a lot of tools and maybe Jai can make a difference with him.

For the commit/decomitt - Players do the early signing before their senior season starts then have to wait and see if the coach gets fired/hired somewhere else in March/April. Able was able to leave easy because of the coaching change.

For the January enrollment, it happens very rarely. For the blue chip players, maybe one or two guys every couple years. Auburn and Kansas State had players do it years ago, but they would need to have an open scholarship for that year as well, which wastes a roster spot for the 1st half of the year. It’s tough for guys to come in mid season and not just acclimate to the program but then try and get minutes as well.

Interesting thing about his situation is that both Coach L and Neptune are no longer with Miami or Nova.

He left a situation in Miami, for what he thought was a better one at Nova, only to have a brand new coach, again.

No matter what Wooga did, he'd be on at least his second coach...
