I think we have 39 scholarship players on defense. Here's the breakdown by classification:

Seniors: 4
Juniors: 8
Sophomores: 8
Freshmen: 19

The Seniors: Darius Smith, Ramon Buchanan, Brandon McGee, Vaughn Telemaque. The only really productive guy out of that group is Brandon McGee, and we had a great CB haul last year.

We've got 89.7% of our defense coming back (92.3% if Cookie Buchanan gets a medical redshirt).

That's another year of experience and weight training for a bunch of guys. The coaches are playing A LOT of guys, so they're getting these guys live reps and tape they can break down.

And if the 2013 recruiting class goes the way we want, we'll be bringing in:

Keith Bryant
Jaynard Bostwick
Tim Williams
Jermaine Grace
Matthew Thomas (please, Baby Jesus)
Artie Burns
Jamal Carter

If a couple of those guys can get in the rotation like Deon Bush, that will help immensely.

We're not where we want to be yet, but I think we'll take a big step forward next year. We should be decent on defense next year, and **** near great in 2014.

That is either a good thing, or a bad thing.

Have yet to determine which it is.

CanesAreAble just gets it.

I think in two years we will be very good. As long as this next recruiting class we get who we need to get.

In theory this sounds accurate, but unless we start bringing in some dominant D linemen, none of it matters.

what does dline look like next year

Defensive End
Kelvin Cain SR
Shayon Green SR
Anthony Chickillo JR
Ricardo Williams R-SO
Jelanie Hamilton SO
Tyriq McCord SO
Dwayne Hoilett R-FR
Jake O'Donnell R-FR
Tim Williams*

Defensive Tackle
Curtis Porter SR
Luther Robinson SR
Jalen Grimble JR
Olsen Pierre JR
Corey King R-SO
Dequan Ivery SO
Earl Moore SO
Jacoby Briscoe R-FR

Take a look at our defensive ends. This year, we played SEVEN guys who'd never taken a snap at defensive end. The ONLY guy who'd ever played DE at the collegiate level was Anthony Chickillo. That is absurd.

Edit: Thus far, only 5 of those 7 have played.

looking at that list de will benifit another yr. dt I find myself looking to highschool seniors. I am thinking 2014 before we are really a competitive team. not nc competitive, but bcs bowl competitive .

oh thanks for list

This Defense's current state reflects off Randy's poor recruiting. It was the inevitable. That being said, our conservative philosophy continues to hurt us. I am disappointed with the lack of adjustments and stubbornness since Golden has taken over. I don't think this D is this bad with a better Defensive coach. Unfortunately, that won't change anytime soon.

Linebacker
Ramon Buchanan SR (if he gets a medical shirt)
Tyrone Cornelius SR
Jimmy Gaines SR
Thurston Armbrister JR
Gionni Paul JR
Denzel Perryman JR
Eddie Johnson R-SO
Raphael Kirby SO
Gabriel Terry SO
Jawand Blue R-FR
Jermaine Grace*
Matthew Thomas*

Coming into the season, 50% of the linebackers had never taken a snap at the position (and possibly 60% if Cornelius never got in the game at LB). One of the experienced guys was Cookie, and he's been snakebit.

Perryman and Johnson should be legit next year, and Kirby has shown promise in limited action.

Cornerback should be solid next year. We need someone to step up opposite Deon.

Well we definitely need an upgrade at DT. I was watching Luther Robinson and Olsen Pierre closely today, and it was pretty pathetic.

Youre right about Deon needing help. If they are going to being in AJL for sure at WR and not safety, move Lockhart to safety. Then we can have a rotation of Bush and Lockhart starting and Artie and Jamal getting reps behind them. From what I have seen the only other guy in that group who MAY become a decent player is Jenkins.

I wouldn't move Lockhart to Safety (AJL, neither). I think those guys can be difference makers at receiver.

Let Jenkins and Carter duke it out (and Burns if he doesn't move to CB).

Either way, Rodgers and Highsmith will get one of the starting spots due to experience.
