Next year qb

In regards to the guys we currently have on the roster: It’s not about giving them a chance to be the starter. It’s about getting the best players you can at every position. Coaches don’t go into the portal to pay transfer quarterbacks a ton of money because they have a bunch of confidence in the guys they already have. If we’re shooing for another portal QB this offseason, it’s because Dawson doesn’t think the guys we have are good enough to start. It’s that simple.

Kind of depends on who the OC is next year. If Dawson leaves gotta figure out who MC replaces him with.

You must hate fun. Gtfoh with this option lol
Not trying to be anti-fun but maybe your comprehension is off. I said, & obviously prefer we get a stud QB. BUT IF WE ARE NOT ABLE TO, I'm against adding another Poff or someone on the same level as the guys we have.

Go Canes

Just a reminder that Mateer’s numbers are deflated by his receivers.

I want Mateer. Anyone comparing him to Ward in terms of impact is delusional, but others thinking he wouldn’t be an upgrade over our other QBs are equally delusional.

Not delusional.

Mateer has 317 rushing yards off scrambles and 573 yards after contact — best of any quarterback this season.

Mateer is the only quarterback in the country with 20-plus passing and 10-plus rushing touchdowns.

Mateer could have just as significant an impact. As a mateer of fact, he could actually have a bigger impact because he could be the QB for two years and that would help with recruiting WRs. Right now there is a big question mark as to who will be throwing the ball.

And to perfectly honest, if I am a WR in the state of Florida choosing between UM and UF in the next two recruiting cycles-

I see UF with Lagway, and UF taking the money that might have been going to Napier’s buyout and purchasing all the talent it can for a run at the title year. UF has surprised a lot of people by not rolling over and giving up. Could buy the sales pitch that FSU had its run in 2023, UM in 2024, and UF could be next up in 2025 or 2026 especially with the cracks in the armor of Bama and UGA.

I see UM with Williams, and a distinct possibility of having to replace Dawson if he gets a HC offer. Cristobal has a track record of misses when it comes to hiring coaches. See Guidry, Gattis, Steele, Addae, etc. Will have to take a leap of faith that Cristobal will hire a good OC. And if UM doesn’t win the next three, I see that UM had the best QB in cfb and gave Cristobal one of the biggest NIL budgets , but that still wasn’t enough to win one of the weakest conferences in cfb.

It’s not mopery, I guarantee this is what other schools competing with UM for recruits are telling them. Mateer directly addresses a lot of the criticism.

Many of us said that getting Ward (or not getting him) was going to go down as one of the most impactful events of Cristobal’s coaching career. If year 3 turned out to be a another .500 season, his fate was all but sealed. There would be little hope for fans, we didn’t have an elite QB prospect on the roster that could let us dream of the future. Would have been a dark cloud of pessimism setting over the program. Would basically be what is happening with FSU right now.

Lagway saved Napier. UF fans are buzzing about his talent level. Is it false hope? Maybe, but false hope is better than none. It is even more exciting for them because it looks like they nailed it with QB recruiting and have Lagway for multiple years. Sorry to the Luke Nickel and Williams fan clubs, but they aren’t elite QBs. If UM doesn’t get an elite QB transfer like Mateer and UM crashes in year 4, I don’t think Cristobal can recover from that.

Agreed.

Mateer is playing some really bad defenses. Ward at least played in a power conference.

Mateer was meh against Boise (a lot of those yards came in garbage time when they were trailing) and didn’t have to play UNLV. He’s still at the top for me, but he’s not in the same category as Ward.

WSU is a essentially a G5 right now, but here is a small list of teams that have had a weaker schedule than WSU

Oklahoma
Kentucky

They’re not essentially a G5. They are a G5. Wazzu and Oregon State got raided for talent after last season by P4 schools (whoops) and they already didn’t have much. I’m a broken record on this, but Wazzu last year would’ve had the 7th best Talent Composite in the AAC. The American. And they played in the Pac12. The tools he has and that context are why I have been bullish on Cam since the first game I saw him play at Washington State two years ago.

Mateer isn’t at that same level of supporting cast disadvantage relative to the competition, but Wazzu would once again have the 7th best roster (by talent composite) in the AAC. It’s an untalented football team.

If you watch Mateer the tools are there and I will absolutely die on the hill that you can not separate a quarterback from their surroundings when evaluating. Bad offensive line play impacts qb’s even on plays where they have a clean pocket because there is a lack of confidence, things get rushed, footwork gets sloppy, and eyes come down. A team having a bad defense forces offenses to press and force things, we’re witnessing this right now.

Now, sometimes it never comes together. For every Josh Allen there’s a Drew Lock that makes me wish I could scrub my texts from group chats. But I’d rather take my chances that it comes together with a guy who has the traits than go for the safe option that gets us 8-9 wins.
