INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Kickoffs in major college football will move from the 30 to the 35-yard line next season, a change intended to keep players safer.

The change was approved this week by the NCAA playing rules oversight panel, which also said the running start by players on the kicking team will be limited to 5 yards

The NFL moved up kickoffs 5 yards this past season and touchbacks increased dramatically. Another new NCAA rule involving free kicks will move touchbacks from the 20 to the 25-yard line, a move intended to encourage more touchbacks.

The panel also approved a rule that will require a player who loses his helmet during a play to leave the game for one play, and there are also new guidelines regarding blocking below the waist and blocking on punt returns. Players will also be prohibited from leaping over blockers when trying to block punts.

i see dudes lose their hats all the time cause of chin strap issues. they just grab it and keep going. wait till some big time qb gets hit and loses his like its no big deal when the game is on the line....

i dont get the leave if you lose your helmet thing. can someone explain why?

Probably so that a trainer (or someone presumably more educated and/or more concerned with safety than a player) can inspect the helmet and make sure it's "safe". Since the helmet is designed to stay on, they don't want someone to get injured and blame the NCAA, etc. by claiming it should know better/should have checked before allowing the player to continue. That's my guess.

Rules like this take ST's a little more out of the game. Let's just do away with kick-offs all together and give teams the ball at the 20, what a freakn joke.

Football is an inherently dangerous sport, any contact sport is, and it seems like they are trying to take the contact out of the sport through bull**** rules.

this limits our ability to exploit our florida speed on returns...smh. It just became alot tougher to win a national title.

SMH. I hope they would fix the real problem with football, the BCS.

I will not disagree with the rules being slanted to "safety". However, I would wait before passing judgement on the below:

"The change was approved this week by the NCAA playing rules oversight panel, which also said the running start by players on the kicking team will be limited to 5 yards

The NFL moved up kickoffs 5 yards this past season and touchbacks increased dramatically. Another new NCAA rule involving free kicks will move touchbacks from the 20 to the 25-yard line, a move intended to encourage more touchbacks."

The extra five yards given on touchbacks is likely to detour the practice of blasting through the back of the end zone some.

So, the NCAA gives 5 extra yards on kickoffs, which makes touchbacks more likely, then turns around and gives the five yards right back for kicking a touchback? Sounds screwy to me.
As for the helmet coming off, I think it is probably a response to so many helmets coming off during games because guys aren't using the chinstraps like they are supposed to be used, because it isn't comfortable.

Lol this ain't a Miami rule anymore. We haven't done **** on special teams in how Long???
