National perception

At this point I don't care what anyone else thinks, and I hope the team stops thinking about it too. They really need to play every game like they're 0-0.

I don't think the team thinks that way. Nothing about their play suggests that they care what their perception is. They played a close road game and found a way to win. That is it.

I hope you're right. At times last night they looked like a team that thought they should win because they were ranked #10 and UNC was 1-4.

No one is going to give us serious consideration until we handle FSU or Clemson, or we really put the beating on the rest of our schedule.

And quite frankly, we shouldnt expect them to. Wins against FAU and Savannah State, a 2-4 USF, and a narrow late minute win against a 1-5 UNC is not going to make "believers" out of most outside observers. The UF game was very close, and there is still very much a perception that if not for Driskell's meltdown, they would probably have won.

So until we beat some of these "hyped" teams, or start DECISIVELY beating the rest of our ACC competition, there are going to remain questions.

I honestly feel like most analysts believe that if/when we face a serious team like FSU or Clemson, that they are goign to beat the daylights out of us. Until we disprove that, they arent going to take us seriously.

While I agree that perception should be earned, that doesn't change the fact that perception, and ranking, of other teams are often not earned by others, especially if they wear a particular patch on their jerseys with an SEC logo. Look at Texas A&M. They are #7 and many still say they are in the National Title hunt. They let a crap Rice team score 31 on them, an FCS Sam Houston team scored 28 on them, a weak Arkansas team kept it close, and they won a squeaker against a crappy Ole Miss team. Miami would have been criticized heavily by the sports media after each and every one of those results, but A&M is just called "scrappy", and is kept ranked high despite having an atrocious defense.

also, what everyone is failing to realize is that this was our first true road game this season. @USF was a home game and every other game has been bye or a home game.

I think some of you are missing the point of the post though. This is more directed to those who think we are going to jump Alabama and Oregon or whatever other undefeated teams if we ourselves go undefeated. I also do not care that much about the perception, because in the end Miami can only control themselves. The point is we could very well still go undefeated, but with the national perception as it is now, there is 0 chance of us jumping an undefeated Alabama or Oregon team.

Personally, if we finish with less than 3 losses, I will be satisfied on the year. I hope we go undefeated, but being realistic. 3 losses is the minimum acceptable level for us this year.

If we go undefeated that means we close the year with wins against FSU, Virginia Tech, and possibly Clemson (or FSU again). That being the case, we don't jump an undefeated Alabama (or really any undefeated SEC team), but we absolutely jump every 1 loss team.

We might or might not jump an undefeated Oregon, depending on how the rest of the PAC schedule plays out this year.

We will jump Ohio State, Louisville, etc.

Well, we beat FSU there in front of God and everybody and the perception may be one thing, but the reality improves drastically.

Fact 1: We are 6 - 0.
Fact 2: Florida is the only good team we have played.

After we get through Florida State and Virginia Tech the perception of us will change.

Isnt missouri still undefeated? If they beat Florida on Saturday, I say they jump us, and honestly they probably deserve it if they do.

Our performance during games - beyond just winning the game - shapes public perception. To me the underlying and deeper issue is that there are so many media types who understate what we've accomplished even when it's deserving of recognition. Certain analysts shouldn't even be allowed to call our games because they have such a pronounced bias against us.

EDIT: OP even if we win that game by four TDs the national talking heads would say we did what we were supposed to do against a 1 win team and still down play it.

Just win

So I said earlier in the week that this game was not important because we might lose, but because it might be a close game. Obviously I was almost wrong there. Many people here keep talking about going undefeated and we will jump Alabama and/or Oregon and I said this game is going to have an impact if we even want to think about that because we have to make sure to boost our national perception. Anything less than a 3 TD win on national tv as the only college game of the night against a team with a bad record (no matter what their talent level may actually be) and it will be just another win. 3+TD win and people get excited about our offense and see us as potentially legit and dangerous.

With that game last night, its already started. ESPN is all over it and are already back to talking about how Florida handed us the game. They have a 5 man panel right now just to talk about the ACC national perception now. We dominate that game last night and since we are already seen as the 3rd best team in the ACC, we would be seen as a legitimate 3rd contender. Now we might be lucky if we are not viewed as a non AQ undefeated team.

I will say one major surprise to me is Paul Finebaum, a usual SEC homer, actually defended Miami in this little group, and said Miami may have just not took UNC seriously. Either way, the only way we can save our reputation is by beating either Clemson or FSU or both. If we beat VT, I think people are still sleeping on them and will undervalue that win. As important as that win is to us, its less important to everyone else.

We can't control perceptions. Only our performance.

Didn't Clemson almost lose to boston college last weekend in Boston?

Nope. They almost lost to BC in Clemson.

I don't understand the meltdown on this board... Clemson is still ranked 3rd. **** happens and if duke played the entire game we win by 14+

Yup

So we struggle with UNC on the road, but gut out a win and we're overrated. Clemson is losing AT HOME to Boston College in the 4th quarter before taking the lead and then scoring their last TD on a defensive score, and....crickets. Clemson gets a pass? Espn ignores it and continues to hype up the game of the century?

if were undefeated w wins @top 5 florida state (could be top 3 or top 10 depending on this weekend), top 20 VT, top 10 clemson/fsu in charlotte along w a W against a then top 12 UF. thats a resume thatll get u in.

well lets see they keep saying without driskels meltdown (more like he is just horrible) they would have beat us, well without morris's meltdown last night we probably would have handled UNC, there are always what ifs in football, to be honest i really dont care what the national media say about us, did we have a bad game yea we did, but all that matters is the the win/loss and we are zero in the loss column

The great thing about our situation is that we will have a chance to prove everyone wrong. We don't have a Boise st schedule where people will be wondering. We will play two top 5 teams and two top 15 teams before it's all said and done. Just gotta win baby.

Sorry to say it, but it is such a rookie mistake to worry about how we are perceived less than 24 hours after the game ends. Give it a couple weeks at least. For example, if we blow out Wake next week, the NC story will be about us overlooking NC or how we perservered despite losing our top RB and our best WR. Beat FSU on the road and no one will care how close the UNC game was.

SVP and Russillo were saying a win vs. Georgia is much better then one vs. Miami and said VT was probably making Title game. Hope it lights a fire under us!

Who cares....does anyone remember these scores??

19-14 vs Wisconsin
13-7 vs Penn State
23-19 vs Cincinnati
10-6 vs Purdue
23-16 OT vs Illinois

That was Ohio State in 2002. The only ranked team on that list was Penn State....nobody gives a ****. Win and advance.
