My thoughts on Practice yesterday...NEG AWAY..LONG

Good stuff. Any thoughts on the middle of the D? Did you actually see Moore or Hamilton improving?

Jelani has spurts of greatness...I thought at one time during the D scrimmage he was the best player out there...moves inside well etc..

Moore I really did not pay attention to...My bad

a Grad Assist told a few of us standing there that....the D lineman ( and he said not naming names) last year..were told to stay engaged with a tackle/Guard so or Lb or blitz package would work..the Tackle or guard baited them and our DL would release trying to make the play..plugging the hole for or package to work..allowing more secs for the QB to complete the pass or RB to cut or get to the edge..he said our corners when sent were always running around our players very few had be lines to the Qb..he said at the Bowl game with Bush sacked Teddy early in the game that was text book...d lineman stay with the Oline moving left teddy saw that moved right and Deion had an easy play...

Now I see why the blitzes didn't work last year...d-linemen are to shoot their gaps during a blitz to cause confusion between the o-line so that the second and third level have a clear shot at the Qb through their gaps. When you sit there and hold the guy the guy blitzing has to run around the d-lineman engaged with the tackle or guard which takes time. That leaves the receivers all day to get open in the zone or against man. Also, the offenses did last year versus the blitzes was keep in the back for protection just in case someone miraculously got through or flare the Rb out for a quick 30 yard gain (see FSU game), or drag the receiver over the middle for first downs on third and long (every game) or the TE for 80 yard gain (UNC)...if you are going to play that scheme your going to need a couple bad *** d-linemen that will command double teams and some big *** lbs that can run through and around the o-line. Through recruiting I can say these types of players are being brought in and the guys already here are bulking up there maybe some improvement from last year.

My thought on what this kid was saying was...we have size and speed...we need to play smarter...seems like rouge players not team players...Leadership and Denzel running this defense is needed

Option 1, our HQ and DC are idiots and have no business coaching at Miami
Option 2, our coaches are good but for whatever reason have blind loyalty to a scheme that doesn't work
Option 3, our HQ and DC have good football sense but aren't good teachers
Option 4, our players lack the talent to run any sort of defense
Option 5, our players lack the talent to run our current scheme but could be successful in another scheme
Option 6, our players are idiots and can't grasp very basic concepts

I believe a combination of a lot of the above. Option 6 doesn't get a lot of talk around here, and when it does, people chalk it up to bad teaching. I appreciate the practice info. Always nice to be able to draw conclusions from something more than results, which can have many influencing factors.

Barrow, beloved Cane that he might be, should have been fired years ago. Our LBs are always lost.

The guy never coached before Randy hired him. And now he's coaching the most critical position in a scheme he never played in.

Sounds like some sort of match coverage drill they were running.

Option 1 is too extreme for me. These aren't fools. They know what their options are and have been exposed to enough.

Option 6 is borderline ridiculous. Do you think we're dealing with a unique set of kids that other schools don't have to deal with? ****, other schools are dying to come into our area and pull some of the same kids.

The rest seem to contribute in varying degrees. Good post.

For me, it's a combination of options 2, 5, and up to this point perhaps a smidge of option 4.

I think the biggest hang-up with our defensive philosophy is that it CAN work - it's even been proven effective not only at a high level (Bama) but even along this coaching tree (UVA and Temple.)

Unfortunately, what CAN work and what WILL work (or rather, what "is working") are not coinciding here at Miami at this time. But because these coaches know that this particular philosophy/scheme is able to work, they will stick by it until either it does work, or they're unemployed.

I still have hope that this philosophy works here - the defensive scheme itself, in a vacuum, is sound IMO. We don't play games in a vacuum, however, so it remains to be seen what can be done here at Miami with the current staff.

Smh. You are trying very hard to make our coaches look incompetent, but you have failed. Read it again without so much hate in your heart.

Is it just me, or does datcaneguy seem to be saying the exact opposite of what gamineal is saying?

Is it just me, or does datcaneguy seem to be saying the exact opposite of what gamineal is saying?
Nope...I read the same.

They're both right, because some blitz schemes call for DL to engage and open up gaps for the LBs, and others call for an all out assault--get there if you can get there, DL or LB either one.

However, per the Grad Asst that Gamineal spoke to, it looks like we run the former type of blitz more often as opposed to the style that DCG is more familiar with.

We've run both types of blitzes, and they both work. It's the execution that needs improvement for them to be effective when we run them.

I certainly don't think 6 is unique to Miami, and lazy may be a better characterization than stupid. It is analogous to something I see in business world, however, and it comes down to culture. If there is no player leadership, then the players will accept mediocrity no matter what the coaches teach and how well they teach it. They are 9-5 guys, not ownership guys.

What do you think our players did after they couldn't get that drill right? Do you think they got back together later in the day and worked on it until it was flawless? Probably not, but I bet there are other schools where that happens because at one point things clicked with the upperclassmen and it became a way of life. Once that happens, it is expected and assumed the same type of behavior will happen down through the ranks and freshman start doing it from day one.

Maybe I am a hopeless optimist and over-defending our coaches, but that is what it is. Watching these interviews, however, I hear a lot more players assuming responsibility for working hard outside of practice. Maybe it's the excitement of spring ball and it will be more of the same, but once a culture of hard work catches hold I think we will see dramatic improvement.

From what I've seen coach D works his *** of but that doesn't change the fact that he is incompetent.

That was my point....some people just dig great holes going no where...??
if you were new to the game and had no idea who he was...you would have thought he was the HC...he was that vocal and working the **** out of guys...

That's what sucks....the difference in practice was night and day compared to the Shannon Administration, and from day one I was encouraged about the road to development. Then came the play calling and defensive scheming thus far....:crownpour: ughhh

UM

Golden turned a top 30 defense into one of the worst in UM history over night... F**k that fat bich...

IMO after this season we could be talking about Denzel the way we talk about Spence, Vilma, Morgan, Smith, Armstead, Barrow, Lewis etc... He is poised to have a HUGE year, and with luck the young talented LB's on the roster follow his lead.

First off
Susan D Miller is that ugly...I mean THAT ugly

You are not allowed to take pics or stalk the players...maybe 30 people there over all...

where we stand its 100 yards from where the Qbs/RBs/WRs do drills...hard to really see anything
when they line up to do scrimmages they are 100+ yards away and line the players up so seeing everything was impossible...Pete I am sure was in the huddle...because all the Media and HS recruits were with us 100+ yards away.....I did leave around 11 (rain & had to see clients) maybe they moved closer after I left..

The LBs, DL, Dbs all ran drills in front of us...this is where I will get negged into oblivion...

Our three studs, Figs, Kirbs and Denzel..are big and fast..but Barrow ran this drill where he played Qb, had a FB and TE running and doing routes...there were three groups of LBs..I just focused on The first two groups..
2nd group was Blue and Grace & ?? I think they rotated a few guys..

anyway....they ran the drill at least 10 times...our black shirt group messed up the drill no more than 5 times..running into each other..leaving the TE open etc...it was unbelievable they few guys I was standing around started laughing at one point when all three of the LBs ( black shirts ) ran into each other...the 2nd group seemed actually better at the drill.....FIGS is a hard worker he finished every drill hard...denzel should have a great year 100+ tackles...but he needs to take over running the Defense make it his...I am not sure is its Barrow or the guys intelligence of football smarts....they seemed like basic drills. Barrow was trying to mix it up and it worked...

the DL all looked good, their drills were simple and just working on technique...Jethro seems like a great guy..he will make you run laps if you ***** up...or walk back ask Ufomba Kamalu...

The Dbs were a lil further away..but talent is there...Bush looks the part as does Carter...safety play will improve

They did run some limited scrimmages in front of us with Crow at Qb working on the Defense...( this is where I am going to get killed)....Coach D works his *** off in this scrimmage...in the middle with the guys..down on the ground with the guys..24/7 coaching, encouraging...screaming but in a coaching manor...he went after coaches about technique...he congratulates when done properly you can see why the players like him. I am not saying this guy is not still a liability but he puts on a show ( show could be it) that he is the best coach out there coaching....on water breaks he grabbed Grace to the side and worked with him..patted his *** walked back to the cooler with him....Grace on the next play made a great stop...coach D was all over him saying thats it thats it...see that guys...HOW HARD IS THAT>>LISTEN GUYS LISTEN.....anyway I am not defending him, its what I saw....

Olsen is better in person that I expected , its still Williams job to lose..he seems so in charge etc...

I took away that work is still to be done but improvement is there the tools are there. Practice is just that PRACTICE..we get the vids which are 30 sec sound bites...not the vibe or felling that is actually going on

PS....Ice was working the HS players that were there..mostly central boys but he impressed me too changed my opinion about him....

O'Donnell last years best player was running and working out...he is big boy.

Like I said this was my take...not a media guy at all...I am sure I missed a ton of other things..hard to see everything when they are scattered over 3 fields...

What's real crazy is that if you say anything positive about the defense or a defensive coach, in particular the DC, you expect to get negged to death.

Golden turned a top 30 defense into one of the worst in UM history over night... F**k that fat bich...

Really? I can understand the frustration, however we have had a bad combination of our experienced players having very little talent, and are talented players having very little experience. The defense will not turn around until our high end talent is both experienced and understands their defensive responsibilities.

One thing we don't need is 5 star talent with 1 star brains. JJ used to value players with high football intelligence over someone slightly more talented. I think Golden's ultimate success or failure is going to be his ability to evaluate the intangibles besides talent. Butch was good at this as well. Nike style camps cannot measure heart and desire. Schemes are hugely overrated on this board. We need 11 guys on defense that play like rabid dogs, but do it with a purpose and intelligence.

It's kind of funny JJ's first year, we went from champions to 6 losses.
2nd year we lost to Tennessee, and everyone said he got out coached by Johnny Majors.
3rd year we lost to Penn State because he was out coached by Paterno
4th year we won and suddenly he became a coaching god, or maybe Switzer just forgot how to coach.

Oh let's not forget " Botch " Davis who turned us into a laughingstock.

Maybe we'll get lucky and hire a coach of the year ,i.e. Larry Coker or an award winning coordinator like ..ummm " Randy Shannon" No, we couldn't be so fortunate!

LB's were running the rat drill. It's a basic drill for man free or cover-1 schemes. It's a tough drill. I know by experience. You're supposed to be play physical with the TE's, which is probably why they were running into each other.

The Sam is playing outside leverage man coverage with the TE. The other two backers (and the S$ depending on # of backs in the backfield) need to deal off the other backs in the backfield, based on the direction of their release. there is always one linebacker (or S$) free based on the releases.

Picture the S$ Will and Mike bracketing two back in the I. If the backs split, then the middle player (Will) is free in the middle. That free player needs to help on an inside release by the TE, usually by taking his head off (and maybe the Sam's head too, who is probably trailing him [due to his pre snap outside leverage]).

It's the first few days of spring ball. We didn't play much man free last year -- this must be new. Chill out. Everyone claims to be a scheme expect. Leave it to the coaches.
