My Thoughts From At The Game

-I'm shocked that no one has been talking about the play calling in the first half. There were two times we got inside the 3-yard line and had to settle for field goals. That **** is just not going to cut it, and I hope we stop getting cutesy in the red zone. Just run the ****ing football. We have the horses to do it. There were also a couple of 2nd and shorts where we were running the football at will, and then we'd come up passing for two straight plays. It drove me mad and it killed off what could have been some promising drives. I hope we start to commit a little bit more to the running game in the coming weeks, and I hope Mo Hagens can get some touches.

#truestory-- Falls back on Kehoe and the o-line.

When Randy was here everyone wanted to blame our lack of physical development on Swasey, but sometimes assistants are simply following the lead of their head coach. Its Golden not Kehoe who wants the constant reshuffling of the Oline. On this one, like it was with Randy, the blame should go the head coach.

Right. Art even mentioned it in one interview. Saying at before he just pretty much picked five and went with them, but Al wants to do it differently. I hve not been a fan of the shuffle because oline play as a unit. But the line was fresh when it mattered so I am not going to question Al about it.

Don't understand how you got Kehoe is to blame from this post. The post was about soft and bad playcalling the redzone and how our personnel are capable. Kehoe has 0 effect on the playcalling here.

Visitor side of the field had Canes fans all throughout the lower level. Very good turnout for a Thursday.

If there was faith we could punch it in with the power run we wouldn't get cute in the end zone. I here we have a seasoned NFLlike line but we are terrible in short yardage situation. We are a mere 30% on 3rd down xonversions. That has a lot to do with the O line coach IMO. The proof is in the pudding

Good post OP.. Unless our red zone production improves drastically (and our number of TO), we won't stay undefeated for long.

I think its time to put the whole team on the OL and RBs back. that should be our strength. I hope that the end of the UNC game gave us an identity that we stick with

power running. play action off that

the playcalling on many of the short yardage plays is awful. we run a lot of slow developing ****. just hit em with a wam or dive right up the gut

We sealed the deal on our 4th quarter trips to the red zone, first half we ran stretch at the goalline, second half we ran power.

The clinching TD run was a zone run(stretch). Mixing and matching those plays is the issue. Not the zone play itself. UNC didn't know what was coming on those two drives.

Or the head coach interfering with how to properly develop a good Oline.

You have an issue with how the offensive line performed in the 4th quarter? Why didn't the shuffling affect them when it mattered most? Picked up every short yardage run when they needed it. Sometimes our guys get beat and isn't always because they've been getting shuffled.

Don't forget that UNC has one of the worst run D's in the country. I attribute their first half success to them being pumped up at home and yada yada yada. However, by the fourth they were drained emotionally and physically, and our superior talent and conditioning won out. Looking at our games at once, i don't think it can be denied that our O-line has struggled in short yardage situations

The issue isn't whether they get beat in short yardage situations. The issue is why. If it was because of shuffling and not being properly developed then why didn't it show itself when it mattered most?

In all politeness, what I wrote is an answer to your question. Well, my take of it

I attended the game also. Very late decision. My dad died a year ago yesterday. I realized I would be in a better place mentally if I were on a trip instead of remembering the corresponding days on the calendar from a year earlier. I made a timeshare switch and spent a week in Atlantic Beach, three hours away from Chapel Hill. I'll throw a recap here. I haven't sampled this site since the game. Apologies if some of this has already been covered:

* It was a huge game for North Carolina. Don't underestimate that. People who aren't sports fans were aware of the Zero Out Thursday and black uniforms. I wore Canes gear all week and fielded many comments. A lady at Tryon Palace in New Bern told me that we better be prepared to get hit for 60 minutes. I sensed all week that she was correct, that the physical energy and edge was going to belong to the home team, particularly early. I was even more convinced once I entered the stadium. A North Carolina student seated next to me emphasized that football season was essentially over after this game. They were already running basketball commercials on the big screen during time outs. It's been a disappointing season and they are unsure about the head coach. Nothing on the calendar other than to show up with a fury on a televised primetime game and take your best shot.

* I visited the North Carolina State and Duke campuses on the afternoon of the game. I sampled opinions and everyone said they would be rooting for the Canes, i.e. against North Carolina. I explained it was the same way we feel about the Gators. They hated the Gators also. That seems to be consensus everywhere. Proper consensus.

* I walked into a small area on the NC State campus called Reynolds Coliseum. The women's volleyball team was practicing. I could have stayed there all day. The world needs more volleyball babes. They look much better in those little indoor shorts than the outdoor volleyball bikinis, IMO. On the other end of the arena the women's basketball team was practicing. I took some videos from the rafters. Within minutes I was confronted by a young assistant who walked up there. They thought I was a Canes spy. It was somewhat discouraging when I was able to convince him otherwise within seconds, and he walked away. Didn't even ask to delete my videos.

* Duke fans lived up to their reputation when they kidded me about being in the wrong stadium. I was on the track at their football venue about 90 minutes before kickoff. It's an unbelievably basic venue, but great location. Such benefits of an on-campus stadium. Athletes were working out on the track, alongside families taking their kids out for some exercise and fun. We can't underestimate what we are missing. Cameron Indoor is just up from the football stadium. I was able to walk right in and take many pictures and videos. I can see how intimidating that place can be, with the tight quarters and relatively low ceiling. At the famous Duke cathedral I was fortunate that a mass was in progress. I remembered to remove my visor. Very impressive campus, even if I still despise their basketball team and I'm not surprised that the biggest jerk from my neighborhood went to school there.

* I was seated low, row 4 in section 103. Mixture of Canes fans and Tar Heel fans. Had to stand the entire game. Those low rows are below field level, or at least appear to be. Two North Carolina students behind me constantly expressed love for one of our cheerleaders, who were smack in front of us. I don't know...as a USC alum I think our scouting needs to be more greedy. Maybe one of our gals could have survived the first cut at USC. Granted, these were the tossy types and not song girl types

* The crowd was loud and in a frenzy. I still haven't seen the tape. Don't be fooled. It felt every bit a hostile environment. They do a good job during timeouts, with effective videos on the big screens. Everything emphasized loud and tough. After first downs the PA announcer says,"...another first down Tar..." and then the crowds yells, "HEELS!"

* Jedd Fisch would have lost this game. I'm convinced of it. We never would have been patient enough with the ground game and Morris would have been beaten up, just like half of our skill players. I was frustrated at our unnecessary passes early in the game, when we had gashed them on the ground. A North Carolina fan behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said I had the right idea. "I don't know why you guys don't keep running the ball. Our defensive line is terrible. They may be playing above their heads right now but they'll wear out if you keep running it." He gave me a knowing nod as he left the game, after we stole it. Overall it was an impressive fan base. Only one jerk threatened to ruin it but luckily he left in the middle of the second quarter, never to return.

* As much as I appreciated Coley's late commitment to the run, we don't do anything to open up the middle of the field. At times it felt as if we were scared to death to have Morris throw anything other than a sideline throw. What happened to the stack formations, or double stacks, like we used at South Florida? They had no idea how to combat them. I realize our receiver numbers are low due to injury but we didn't use those looks even before Dorsett got hurt.

* It's sad to see Malcom Lewis out there, all but ignorable. He's still overweight.

* I knew Duke would never finish off that run. He gets to top speed quickly but there's no extra gear

* We were extremely fortunate at times. On both of Howard's interceptions it didn't look like we had a prayer of stopping short and midrange plays but for some reason North Carolina lobbed it mindlessly deep. The third quarter ended at exactly the right time, just as we were about to be gashed and down 14. We don't come back from there, just like we wouldn't have rallied from 24-7 against Georgia Tech. That break between quarters gave our defense just enough time to rest and refocus. Then they let the play clock run out at 3rd and 1 while ahead 23-20. That was immense, along with the subsequent motion penalty, creating 3rd and 11.

* Our base defense would hold up on first and second down then the 4 or 5 Stooges would enter the game and blow it on third down. I'm not down on those guys overall but in this particular game the situational substitution wasn't working and I was ticked. I didn't want a three hour drive back to Atlantic Beach in the wee hours after a defeat, and after all the inevitable taunting leaving the stadium. Our third down defenders are itty bitty guys and other teams will do a more relentless job shoving them aside. I still don't know why we can't an every down pass rusher, like a Daniel Stubbs.

* I almost forgot the most fortunate break of all, when we seemingly got content to settle for a 51 yard field goal into a slight breeze to tie the game. We stalled at their 34 and only a North Carolina time out saved our hide when we had called a running play smack into their teeth on 3rd and 3. After this game I don't want to hear about bad luck in subsequent games. I don't know how it looked on TV but in person it felt absolutely stolen. The team that came to play left on the short end.

* I don't even know what our offensive line personnel was during that final drive. I was preoccupied at the outcome. During the game I wanted Henderson out there, and not limited Wheeler at right guard alongside Linder out of place at right tackle. That was fine against Georgia Tech, who were vulnerable on their left defensive end. Overall it won't succeed.

* Dorsett would never have made that great first quarter catch a year ago. I felt sick when he got hurt, just as he was becoming more dependable. But Brennan Carroll after the game walked near us and seemed to think Dorsett was out for the season. We overheard words along those lines. It was quite a relief to learn otherwise

* O'Donnell came through when needed. I'm amazed at how relaxed he looks out there, on the field and on the sideline. Big leg, especially as a punter

* Crawford never surprises me. That was a clutch drive. I found myself desperate for a big gain on a first down run, otherwise we were in trouble forced to pass on second and long. I think the first three runs succeeded and we were stuck only once. It's admittedly a blur several days later. Out passes were a good choice. I think I would have cringed at anything over the middle.

* Our defensive strategy in the final 16 seconds was worse than anything I remember in more than 4 decades of following this team. It's as if we intentionally raised their expectation at least 10 fold. We had guys 60 yards deep on the first play, as if their only option was a Hail Mary. I was going nuts. The worst part is I knew we'd need to get lucky on the final play. And I'm convinced it would unfold that way again. D'Onofrio isn't the type to learn from something like that if the bottom line didn't shift.

* The Canes turnout was great. I can't believe the suggestions otherwise. I saw green and orange all over campus, including the walk from the Dean Smith Center. Most of our fans were bunched in 101 and 102, to my left. But I scanned and saw Canes fans throughout that side. The numbers were obvious when the game ended and Canes fans grouped at the bottom rows throughout the entire visitor side, with the players making the full pass, slapping hands for 100 yards. I stayed an extra half hour or more after the game ended. One young couple from that area was in full garb and attending their first Canes game. They were incredibly excited at the outcome and asked me to snap pictures as they flashed the U. They did have one perplexity, however. They couldn't figure out what Sebastian and the Miami crowd were chanting after he winds up. I told them it was C-A-N-E-S, CANES!. They were amazed, saying it didn't sound like anything they could identify. And I must say that chant has become rather sloppy over the years, with more emphasis on speed than words or clarity.

* Overall it was a fantastic escape. I told Tar Heel fans the next few days that I would have apologized years ago, but not now. We are in need of relevancy and every success helps. I'm still a huge believer in preseason ratings and think our #27 early call is likely closer to reality than where we sit at present. The defense is still manned by too many mediocrities. That's Florida State's edge. They have prioritized that side of the ball for years while we gathered skill players. I have no idea how Florida State's legitimacy can be questioned when they have allowed only 4 yards per play, or thereabouts, for 3 seasons running.
