Must Listen: DC Mark D'Onofrio breaks down Boston College ga

We have to play some games up front with our DL on 3rd and Long scenarios. Go watch the BC tape again. Most blitzes were from an LB or S coming up and trying to time up a blitz to one side or the other, while our DL just basically tried to beat the man in front of them one-on-one. We can't do that right now. We have to incorporate some twists/stunts with our DE's and DT's. Make the OL try to block a moving target instead of knowing that the guy in front of them is just going to hand-fight with them for 5 seconds while the QB throws to the open man.

We tried some stunts and they didn't work.

If the front 4 can't pressure, there's only so much we can do because the back 7 isn't experienced enough to compensate.

I honestly didn't see that many stunts/twists against BC...at least as many as I wanted to see when it was obvious we couldn't straight rush with 4. It's on D'Onofrio to find something that works within that realm even if it's combined with another blitzer. Either that, or coach the **** out of it til your guys understand how to execute that effectively come gameday. Even the delayed LB blitzes didn't look good. It always got blocked up.

It could be that we're not disguising the blitzes well enough. It could be as simple as a tell due to the way someone is lined up in our formations that we blitz out of. D'Onofrio is paid to figure that out, I'll give him time to do it.

I was really impressed with Luther Robinson's caused fumble.

he was our best dlineman in the game imo....

dude was the only one that consistently penetrated...

he's better suited to penetrating. when he went head up on the LG at least twice he got blown out the hole (one time it was cringe worthy). but when he shot the gap his quickness was too much for that same LG. would like to see him paired with Pierre often - and might be good to have them as the nickel DTs. at least they can get some push in the pocket - force the QB to at least move in the pocket.

i feel good about where we're going.. these guys just GET IT. cannot be said enough.

We ran some stunts and twists in the 4th - particular on BC's last few drives. We were actually starting to get a decent push... but again busted coverage in man/zone had Rettig's 1st reads wide open.

Combination of LBs and DL play right now is killing us. Safeties too... we just aren't that good.

need to disguise who's rushing better - especially since no one is a big time pass rusher. in nickel situations show 5, bring 4. just mix it up when it comes to which four rush. if we are using Chick and OLBs/DEs at DT in the nickel it lends itself to being able to offer that flexibility.

We did this a few times towards end of the game. I saw Shayon Green drop from the DT spot into a hook zone.
