Must Listen: DC Mark D'Onofrio breaks down Boston College ga

Played 25 guys on defense, only 4 are seniors. Most he's ever played
Obviously they made mistakes but showed resiliency; now need to clean it up for upcoming weeks
Perryman said in post game interview Coach D told him what to do on that pick 6
Most excited in game about Johnson's strip and Gunter's scoop. Bush would have scooped and scored on Robinson caused fumble in Chick doesn't fall on it.
Played OC 4 times. Watched all games he played vs him and game at NMSt, OC went against what he did last year and in those games.
Poor start, that played well after adjustments to go on 41-9 run, then mistakes in end of game. Felt they adjusted fairly well after 2nd series (Miami's offense 3 and out on their 1st series so not much time). 2 TDs in first 16 plays, didn't have their next one until play 80.
Too many mental errors but 4 red zone stops, 3 TOs, and 109 yards rushing allowed means they did some things right.

KSU
Klein is big, they use their scheme's well to fit what he does. Very physical and finds seems, wants to run North and South, on contact he usually falls forward (need to gang tackle).
Accurate passer, have to commit a lot to their run game.
Excited to get to play these guys, why you come to Miami to play these type of games.
FB Wilson, TEs are really physical. WR block well down field.
Have to decide how many to commit to the run with the way they use their option looks. Sometimes 8/9 and then try to hit play action, cat and mouse game.
Great test and opportunity this week.

Half the 24 players that played on D were 1st time players for Miami.
Looking at tape shows if a guy needs 25 snaps instead of 12, or 50 instead of 65, etc.
Mentioned Johnson again, made a mistake but played through it and made a nice play (chasing guy down and creating fumble)

Here's Golden summary from Hurricane Hotline

Talking about 1st Duke TD: Linder knocked his guy off, Walford got 2, Dorsett came all the way from BC sideline for a block
Older veterans held it together after bad 14-0 start;
Lay your brick, eventually you will have a wall-Goldenism
Flowers played 75 plays on Saturday; On Monday he asked to redue strength test and went up 2 reps. Armbrister played 50 plays and upped 4 reps.
He says those guys are a Fr and So and don't know you are "supposed to do that." They watch film, lift weights.
Tough is a skill, either develop it or you don't, will see how tough we are this weekend.
Morris poise, football intelligence, running the game/system was so much improved from last year. Golden said people don't realize how well he ran the team vs BC
Executed Jed's gameplan to a T. They will give things underneath the zone, 51% on 3rd because they had short 3rd down conversion. % would have been unreal if they didn't drop 7 passes
Can fix execution, can't fix conditioning, toughness.
KSU- 9 Sr on D, 7 Sr, 4 Jrs on O. KSU 42 returning letterman. BC 41 returning letterman. Talked a little about KSU JUCO route, no one has been better. Kansas has great JUCO football.
Disciplined team, great special teams, control the clock; Speaks highly of Coach Snyder.
They were great in close games last year, QB can win them games late.
Liked the way Duke reacted to TDs: tossed football right to ref, he understands it takes 11 to score on a long TD
Holy cow moment: Lewis TD, both WR made block and Lewis jukes safety; did he really do that
Hardest thing is adhere to plan no matter what's going on in the game. Talking about how many guys he wanted to play. Trusted the young guys to make plays.
Only lose 1 Sr on offense and 3 Sr on defense next season. Pretty much whole 2 deep.
Easier to control variables on offense then Defense. Things don't change to much on O. Defense is everything, gets difficult for young guys
Thought Armbrister did well, 1st experience at SAM, him and Eddie split time. Eddie's 1st play was a TFL. Both guys have never played in college game
Kicking game was good: Jake missed one KO, Botts might have been MVP of game.
Trusts his guys on KO coverage; Finnie and Terry had a great hit the last KO; mentioned how young KO coverage team is; mentioned Crawford
Henderson's 1st practice today with the varsity; he's going to have to work but chance they could be on same line; always trying to play best 5; will adjust accordingly
9 SR on KSU defense: big LBs, thinks Arthur is exceptional-dives over every piles, no regard for his body; they are really well coached on defense
Thinks Klein is best running QB in the country; executes his offense extraordinarily well (may be best QB in nation because of this). 300 carries last year (led conference).
Recruiting numbers have changed with changes in offense; used to carry at least 12 LBs; now only around 10 because playing nickel so much so need more CBs.
So many WRs now that they have diluted their value in the draft.
Created Mark and Denzel on the pick 6

I think one of the most interesting things he said was that they played about 40% of the snaps in man 2 man. He went on to say that the majority of the explosive plays were due to blown assignments in man coverarage with guys not communicating with each other.

I don't know if he is just saying that or of its the truth. A lot of the guys on here were calling for his head because of his zone d calls.

I don't know about the percentage, but the explosion plays were most certainly usually the result of man errors and we did have to back off to more zone as a result.

He likes to rush 3 or 4 and zone the backend on 3rd and longs. I think this is what frustrates people - because it gets torched so often.
We do a good job of putting teams into 3rd and long situations (we did last year as well)... but we can't get off the field.

And fwiw I think it's easier to correct the man to man MEs than it is to get our guys playing good zone defense.

The one thing that comes thru in that interview is that the coaching staff has a plan for everything they do.

I really believe many of these problems will be alleviated once better talent is brought in and it becomes experienced

This. Guys will learn their assignments and who to pick up in the flat, or hit the tightend before they make their break... or they won't play.

Biscuit--those arent mutually exclusive. They did hit our zone up a little but the bit chunks where we busted were versus man. In fact a couple of the near misses were versus man as well.

The D will get better as the season progresses. I'm not saying we have one of our old 2001 type defenses or anything yet, but we will be better than the 1st game. I am confident.

The part about getting teams in 3rd and long, but being unable to get off the field is so true, and so frustrating. We have to find ways to get more pressure in those types of situations........
