Miami walk-on commit Moose Griffith finishes second in state weightlifting

Moose is earning his nickname. Reed looks solid, he does not look like an out of shape 350. 25 pounds sounds like a lot but it’s not when you are already 325. If that’s all he puts on in the offseason he should be fine by the start of the season.

In power lifting, it's combined total poundage of bench, squat and deadlift (mans lift )

I did this very competitively for years in younger days , trained at George Prince gym then traveled and trained at many places being sponsored.

After football injuries ended my career , I still had very competitive juices to deal with , I turned to power lifting 25 years old (40 years ago) back then.

weighed 220- 242 lbs

410 bench had tough time with this lift long arms killed , my squat and dead lifts were close to Florida / national record levels at the time very close fluctuated between 730 to 765 usually this poundage meant I usually pulled around 12-1 AM depending whom was left or whom was the guest lifter flown in to compete , made attempt at 810 National record (220 lbs body weight) at the time couldn't clear my upper knees Southern States opened at 765 a breeze , 810 different story...DEAD LIFT IS A MANS LIFT.

My best lifts at 220 pounds

410 weak got smeared
745 top (5) nation
765 same
total 1920lbs

These kids not bad at all.

GOCANES

All weights are heaver a competition

yeah, okay, but what's your 40 time?

Yeah me too. Recall we had that one guy -- Tyler Grimsley I think -- that was super strong, but it didn't translate into any PT for him.

One of the strongest guys I ever saw in college football was Dock Luckie, a DE for UF. I think he benched something like 605. He started for Florida but was not an exceptional player. I think he was also SEC shotput champion. Don't think he had much of an NFL career, if any at all.

I believe his half brother was UM DT Willie Lee Broughton, who was probably a better football player.

Since we're talking about personal success, I'm sure I could BP 400 over a period of several weeks...maybe 4 x 100 or more likely 8 x 50.

Power lifting Does not always translate to football. But this will be interesting to watch.

I used to get a kick out of some of these guys in the gym who would put a lot of weight on the bench, then there would be somebody supposedly “spotting” them who would effectively help them bench another 50 plus lbs by grabbing the bar with both hands and help pull it up.

On my way to 400 on the bench press i might try to get to the gym and put up 50. That will be a good start. Next week I'll try to go twice and knock off 50 per visit. That means the third week I'll still have 250 to go. Then I might try to up it to 75 per visit. That's ambitious but I'm confident I can do it. Just gotta stay focused, eat right and get enough sleep.

Hopefully Moose turns out to be a surprise. Big Ol' Reed will no doubt be a contender for Guard opposite of Donaldson. Scaife will be a center IMO.

Starting to show that way--April 9, 2019
"With Gaynor not available, the first-team o-line looked to be: LT Zion Nelson, LG Zalontae Hillery, C Navaughn Donaldson, RG Delone Scaife, RT Kai-Leon Herbert. We have never seen Donaldson snap the ball before. It's also been a while since Scaife lined up on the inside. The second-team unit appears to be: LT Jared Griffith, LG John Campbell, C Tommy Kennedy, RG Cleveland Reed, RT Zach Dykstra. Griffith is a preferred walk-on that redshirted last season. "
