[h=3]Miami Hurricanes (9-3) vs. Louisville Cardinals (11-1)

Dec. 28, 6:45 p.m. ET, Orlando, Fla. (ESPN)[/h]MIAMI HURRICANES BREAKDOWN

Miami was the preseason favorite to win the ACC's Coastal Division. A late-season loss at Duke ruined those plans, and in some respects it makes this a down year for the Hurricanes. But there were plenty of positive developments in Al Golden’s third season, and with the cloud of an NCAA investigation finally lifted, better things could be on the horizon.

[+] EnlargeCharles LeClaire/USA TODAY SportsFreshman receiver Stacy Coley shows electrifying potential for Miami.

There was the upset of instate rival Florida in Week 2, a triumph that lost some of its punch as the Gators struggled but one that nonetheless was huge for the program. There was also the 7-0 start that helped set up a showdown and atmosphere in Tallahassee that rivaled some of Miami and Florida State's past get-togethers.

A rough second-half doomed the Canes on Nov. 2, and consecutive losses to Virginia Tech and Duke ended their hopes of getting to the ACC title game. (Losing running back Duke Johnson for the season with a broken ankle in the FSU loss did not help matters, either.) But the defense stepped up in a victory over Virginia, and a 41-point outburst at Pitt on Black Friday was a nice way to end the regular season, giving Miami its first nine-win season since 2009 and leaving the program with a chance to get to 10 wins if it can win this bowl game.

One person worth watching the next time the Canes take the field? Freshman Stacy Coley, who has scored touchdowns on a kickoff return, a punt return, a rush and a reception in his first season. He has 30 receptions for 559 yards as a receiver. -- Matt Fortuna

vs. LOUISVILLE CARDINALS BREAKDOWN

The season began with such high hopes for the Cardinals. They returned a veteran team that beat Florida in the Allstate Sugar Bowl in January and had Heisman Trophy candidateTeddy Bridgewater back to lead the way.

[+] EnlargeDavid Butler II/USA TODAY SportsIf not for one tough loss, Teddy Bridgewater and Louisville would likely be playing for a much bigger prize.

A clear path presented itself, with one of the easiest schedules in the country. But a national championship run was not meant to be. Facing upstart UCF at home in October, a game that represented the Cardinals’ biggest challenge to date, they slipped. Louisville built a 28-7 third-quarter lead and seemed in control.
But the defense, much improved this season, allowed UCF back into the game with blown assignments and missed tackles. Louisville reclaimed a 35-31 lead with three minutes to play when Dominique Brown ran in for a 15-yard score. But the Knights marched right down the field and won with 23 seconds left when Blake Bortles hit Jeff Godfrey for the game-winning touchdown.

Louisville players were crushed, their hopes for not only a national championship run but back-to-back BCS appearances dashed. There would be no outright conference championship to celebrate. That loss ended up eliminating Bridgewater from serious Heisman Trophy contention.

Despite the bitter disappointment, Louisville won the rest of its games, including a thrilling overtime victory over rival Cincinnati to end the regular season. The Bearcats have won 11 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. Coach Charlie Strong is 22-3 since the start of 2012 and seems to have the program in good shape as it prepares to play its final game in the American Athletic Conference before moving to the ACC next season.

Though Bridgewater has been playing outside the national spotlight since the UCF loss, he had another exceptional season, throwing for 3,523 yards and hitting career marks with a 70.2 completion percentage, 28 touchdown passes, and a career-low four interceptions.

On defense, Marcus Smith led the nation with 12.5 sacks and teammate Lorenzo Mauldinhad 9.5, making them the top sack duo in the nation. The UCF performance was uncharacteristic of the way this group played all season, as it ended up ranked in the top 10 in every major defensive NCAA category. But then again, Louisville did not play a better team all season. -- Andrea Adelson

I hope we break that white-hater TB in half.

But we won't because we'll be spending bowl practice in our textbooks so Shalala can feel better about herself as she eats hummus and orders her partner another vibrator.

Are you really that ******* stupid?

Racist, offensive, homophobic and moronic all in one short post. Poster hasn't realized it's the UNIVERSITY of Miami. Kids, and they are still kids, aren't there simply to make sure you get 3 hours of joy on a Saturday. They are there to get an education and play ball with a few having dreams of playing on Sunday.

all within the last 3 years…..hmmm

The cloud was a fantasy, right?

Man, given our safety situation, I would have LOVED to have had Gerrod Holliman on the roster. Highsmith probably would have never seen the field.

Trashiest fan base in America. We get it, you don't care about the school. After all, why would you?

It might be funny if there were actual classes going on during bowl practice time.

You didn't actually expect his stupid rant to be based on anything factual and sensible now, did you?

Louisville coach Charlie Strong: "Playing a quality opponent in Miami is great for us. We recruit that area heavily."

Charlie's meatball head is smiling from ear-to-ear. TB, Eli Rogers, Keith Brown and Louisville as a whole wants this game more.

We have to make sure we do not have the same mentality that Florida had in the Sugar Bowl last year. Florida took them for granted. I hope we do not make the same mistake. They like the "underdog" role.

Louisville is the new Virginia Tech... The ACC is going to make sure they become our rivals. SMH.

their coach's might wanna get some track guys to run scout team O receiver, these doudes aint seen the speed we got at receiver,

Dorito has a month to not allow another 500ypg....

It may not even matter. It's been said by some of the defensive players that teams are running different plays at them. Plays that they have not seen on film... I expect Louisville to flip the script some as well.

I can't believe yall think we'd lose to Louisville granted TB is legit but have you actually watched any of the games this season.... Worse than Pittsburgh if you ask me they're not who you all think they are. They're actually worse. 45-28 canes

There's plenty to not like here as there's more to lose than gain. Win and it's meh.....lose and it's very very bad for the program.

That said - I am not one of the Golden/Dorito bashers. I think with a month to prepare + an improved Morris + not being impressed with what I've seen of Louisville this year = I'm not nervous. and for those predicting a loss.....don't you guys ever tire of this Debbie downer ****?

This.

Go Canes

/will pause my Doh'nofrio bashing until December 29

IIRC he wanted to come here but he didn't have the grades.

I might be in the minority here but I like to follow/post on a Cane site because I am a fan of the team. I hope Canes do well and good things happen.

I don't get posting all the negative stuff vs. the D over and over and over. Maybe there is no "F@ck Manny, Fire Dorito" site but, if you have nothing constructive to add, why bother.

Pretty sure Golden knows the D needs work. I suspect it's come up around the dinner table.

I feel you. But it is painful to endure years of the worst defenses in Miami history. Especially when a championship is there for the taking.

Slam bridgewater, make him fumble, take it to the house a few times and we all will feel better.
