Miami to appeal scholarship losses?

If you pay attention to the details of the ruling, you will see the devil quite clearly. Man, UM did a masterful job of making sure the language regarding the scholarship reductions maximized its ability to mitigate any real impact. Especially when coupled with the preemptive moves we made.

Absolutely.

This isn't even a speed bump. Sort of like they painted a spot on the pavement where a speed bump was supposed to go.

I remember Bernie Kosar saying that UM self reported something like 6 to 10 scholarship reductions over the past two seasons. At the time he said it, Donna's office denied it, but I think we will find that it was less of a denial as it was waiting for the proper time to claim those scholarship reductions.

My best guess is that we only have 3 scholarship reductions left to declare......over 3 years. :)

Its Great to be...
Maybe. But most schools play at somewhere under 85 every year. It's not unusual at all. So, if you accept that to be true, I would think UM would have had to notify the NCAA beforehand if they intended to self-impose. Claiming it in hindsight seems extremely thin to me.

Of course, UM may have talked to the NCAA about that unofficially. I hope so.

Why wouldn't this information already have been relayed to the ncaa beforehand?

Because until you know if there will be ANY scholarship reduction, (until punishment is determined) you sit tight and don't do anything.
Maybe there was the hope (as slim as might be) there will be no more punishment, only time served.

But if you've already self imposed limits, what would be the point of not telling them until after the fact? That doesn't make much sense. If you get time served, how does saying that you've already held back X number of scholarships hurt you? It doesn't. Meanwhile, if you keep the self imposed reductions to yourself, get hit with reductions from the NCAA, and then after the fact say, "but we've already held back X number of scholarships," the NCAA is going to call BS (and rightfully so).

Since you KNOW the ******** are after you, you do not tell them so they don't just hike the number up on top of what you gave up. Now the NCAA got to save a little face an give what looks like additional punishment with us doing backdoor with "we did that already". They quietly say "good boy, ok that enough". Everyone goes their merry way and Al begins to pillage and plunder talent.

I think we reported there were reductions but we didnt report the actual number waiting to get the punishment and then I guess use the number as a rebuttal. Not sure why but I trust in the plan that has been flawless thus far.

Ive thought about this myself. I wonder if a school could lose a couple of last minute commits then say to the NCAA, "We would like to report these unused scholarships in case you bust us for something down the line..." :) Maybe that wouldnt work but UM was in the middle of an active investigation in which the NCAA agreed to have UM do a side by side investigation of their own and allowed UM to self report. Given that, I tend to think that any accounting tricks possible would be in-play. But again, Im not a lawyer (I have an ethical professsional career) so I cant speak for sure here.

That would definitely be the reason for not telling them ahead of time.

To think after all that, UM still had an ACE in the HOLE just waiting to sling that ACE on the table like Maverick!

Well, we are at 75 this year, which is 10 less than the max.
If the NCAA accepted our two year post season ban, it makes sense that any other self imposed restrictions would also have to be accounted for.

I'm getting the feeling that we won't be reducing anything.
Seeing that we have 27 verbals plus Griffin and Lockley coming, it doesn't look like Al is scaling anything back.

The way I understand it, 3 scholarships a year essentially means that no walkons will not get transferred to scholarship. I can't remember the last time we started the season at 85.
