Miami Hurricanes Roster Comparison 2025 vs 2014

247 has a depth chart story. Daylen Russell slimmed down a lot.....

I think Golden was underrated in talent acquisition. The NCAA investigation really blunted his impact in the 2012 and possibly 2013 cycles, and by 2014 the entire “hope” narrative that every new coach has initially had been expended. His defense needed to change.

The word I used for Golden's recruiting was "lumpy". Onion had the same problem. They'd land a Top 5 kid nationally at one position, and either no one or a panic offer last minute. Those were always JAGs or locker room cancers that washed out.

We saw this year that even if you are ELITE, top in the nation, at one position, you cannot consistently win games without the entire 22 + STs being at least respectable. Golden had real talent, just not enough of it and major gaps. Hence his record. And don't get me started on his defense at the time.

Nope.

Based purely on composite scores this is a significantly more powerful team than 2014. Depth is generally better in most position groups. There are 54 blue chip players (12 more than in 2024) versus the 25 of 2014. The only hesitancy is that we know the outcomes of that 2014 squad. Some players like Njoku and Berrios outperformed their rankings. Miami’s squad is still largely theoretical.

Our OC is better than Coley. DC is a TBD, but hopefully better than D’Nofrio.
How do you assess 2014 corching staff vs 2025 corching staff?

👀

Important to note the year players were in.

For example at quick glance, you would say 2014 TE room is better. However, it shows Njoku and Herndon were freshman. Along with an older Clive Walford.

I think I would take our current TE room with a more experienced Baumann and a sophomore Lofton. And like Njoku and Herndon, a freshman with huge talent in Schott.

Check out the 2025 vs 2010 comparison I did yesterday. The 2010 roster, even though it had 15 more blue chip players than 2014, is so unbalanced.

NOTES
  • Defensive back depth was minute with the 2014 Hurricanes, with the squad carrying just 11 players. The 2025 Hurricanes on the other hand have 16 DBs
  • The 2025 Hurricanes have the highest blue chip total of any squad in the last twenty years. It presently rises from 42 in 2024 to 54 this year
  • The 2014 Hurricanes were on a slight ascent after reaching a nadir of just 20 blue chip players two years earlier, but still had just 25 on roster
  • This year's total signing class is the most weighted towards blue chips of any class in the last twenty years as well at 67%. The closest previously were the 2023 and 2007 classes (58%). Last year was 43% by comparison
  • The 2014 Hurricanes signing class had a blue chip ratio of 30%
  • Attrition to date going into the 2025 season has been lower than previous years with 28 outgoing players, again reflecting the youth of the overall team last year
  • The 2014 Hurricanes were one of the youngest Miami teams surveyed in the last twenty seasons and had the experience edge over 2025 Miami in only the following position groups: WR, S

@GojiraCane Just to confirm, you're comparing 2014 to 2025 because these were both the 4th year of the respective head coaches, and presumably because Richt and Manny didn't get to year 4?

It is an interesting point of comparison, since both Golden and Mario had relatively decent seasons in year 3. I had already given up on Golden, though, because of his blatant attempt to jump to Penn State and his refusal to change his defense. I have the opposite reaction to Mario. First, he is fiercely loyal to Miami. Second, he saw his defense was abysmal and entirely reshaped it, while also making the right moves to keep his offense on track to perform at a playoff level. I expect he'll add talent to both units over the next few months and we'll have a complete product come Notre Dame.

Agree with your points...except...

Mario unwilling/unable to put the hammer down on D scheme failures as season progressed is very troubling...

I hope he learns from this mistake.

Clive was very good that year. He's an example of someone being developed from not good into an excellent player.

That’s right. That’s why I also did the 2010 vs 2025 comparison.

Nobody signed more highly ranked guys who couldn’t qualify academically than Al Golden. I think mostly because the big schools didn’t bother with them.

Mario's only option would have been to fire Guidry and put in JT or DNich as interim with a outside analyst helping them. He couldn't run the defense himself, and Guidry wasn't budging... I'd personally would have done that after Ga Tech. But it would have been immensely disruptive, and could just as easily have backfired.

He was indeed, became a 3rd round pick. But to my point, Njoku and Herndon didn't record a single stat that year.

I think this years room will be deeper with Baumann and Lofton. And I expect Schott to produce more than Njoku/Herndon did szn 1.
