Miami Draft Picks

This is why so many of us look shocked with how our players do in the league, whether they're doing bad or good. Our evaluation skills suck apparently.

Two trends I'm noticing with the Miami guys in the pros.

1) They need to have at least one elite skill. That's why guys like Brandon Harris and Damien Berry didn't excel even though they were better college players than other former Canes. Those guys were pretty good at a lot of things but not great at anything. In the pros where are there no bad players, you need a difference-making ability or you're a dime a dozen. Sam Shields has elite speed, Orlando Franklin has elite power, etc.

2) They've got to be mentally tough. Tommy Streeter and DVD have the speed, but they get down on themselves easily and don't have the innate confidence of guys like Olivier Vernon or Brandon Meriweather. OV was getting in fights from Day One of camp and mentally pushed through periods where he was struggling. Most Miami kids are like that.

I talked to a couple football folks who went to Alabama after leaving Miami, and they told me flat-out that Miami had better talent at the top levels. They said that once these guys got to the pros and the other stuff (coaching, nutrition) became equal, their talent would shine through. The two examples they gave were Lamar Miller v. Trent Richardson and Olivier Vernon v. Courtney Upshaw. It sounded crazy at the time, but sure enough, the two Canes are outplaying the two Bammers.

Wouldn't you say those 2 aspects apply to every NFL draft prospect?

I've noticed in the past that these boards usually overvalue how high our players will go.

We do both. Overvalue and undervalue.

They thought Ryan Hill would be drafted and DVD wouldn't. Also thought Brandon Harris was a 1st rounder.
They thought Vernon would never play in the league.
They thought Javarris James was slow and would never play in the league. (he ran a 4.5 at the combine)
They thought Allen Bailey would be a 1st rounder cause of his stature.
They thought Orlando Franklin was a scrub.
They thought Damien Berry would be a good NFL running back.

Dunno who thought Vernon wouldn't play in the L. He was built to be a draft prospect. Whether he'd succeed in the league was going to be up to his focus.

Not sure who thought Orlando Franklin was a scrub. I probably overrated him when I compared him to Branden Albert.

Wasn't in this board, but people used to clown on Franklin and Vernon.

perriman 3-4 if he declares[/QUOTE] Shouldn't leave needs t work on coverage skills. Doubt NFL will work with him at that level to teach him the position. If he has played LB most of his football life then he should be able able to cover by now
Linder 3-4 round Solid palyer throw his time here
Sentrel 3-4 Waste of potential solid player should have been the next McKinney
Morris 3-6 Josh Freeman II all the measurables but lacking between the ears
Hurns 4-6 Solid contributer will mke it in the NFL seem to have god work ethic
Porter 5-7 Injuries and illness hampered career here high potential in the NFL
Robinson 7-FA Maybe his dad can call and get him moved up a couple a rounds nonexistent his senior year after all the crying and moaning his dad did
O Donnel 6-FA Wish we had him 4 years instead of one.

I hope my Dolphins can snag Henderson, Hurns, and Morris. They all have the tools necessary to be good players in the league. I think a healthy Morris with good coaching can be a quality NFL QB. I am not sold on Tannehill and would love Morris to come in and compete. Henderson could solve our problems at OT cuz Clabo and an old Mt McKinney aint cutting it. Plus we need WRs. Give me: Henderson in rnd 2, Morris in rnd 3, and Hurns in rnd 4. I like that.

Morris: 2-4
Seantrel: 4-6
Chickillo: 4-6
Denzel: 2-3
O'Donnell: 5-7

If the draft were tomorrow these would be the spots they would go.
Hurns after some workouts will probably be 5-7, Linder will be 5-7, Porter and Robinson will be 7-FA

Everyone is high on Linder but the thing about inside lineman is that they are not a necessity for good NFL teams. The highest I see Linder moving up to is 3rd and that would mean a great Senior Bowl, Combine, and Pro day.

Linder 2-3
Henderson 3-4
Wheeler 6-7
Perryman 3-4 (don't think he leaves but if he does...unless he does some sub 4.6 40 yard dash, he will have excellent strength numbers)
Morris 3-5 (maybe late 2nd round round if he has a great bowl game and the right coach thinks he can work with the raw materials)
Hurns 3-5 (The stats are there, the speed is the question. If he runs a sub 4.6 I could see a late 2nd rounder)
Porter 4-6
Robinson UFA
O Donnel 7-UFA
Rodgers UFA (thanks dad)

Hoping Felicano, Perryman and Walford all stay.

Thats the thing.....Linder plays Guard for us...but dude can be split out wide at Tackle. Inside guys arent a necessity, BUT....Flexible ol are...Linder is the epitome of that...Dude can play center in the league if he has to. Look where Miami drafted that bum Dallas Thomas out of Tenn

Bringing this back up from Dec since draft day is coming. I don't think I was negative enough back then. SH can probably move down a few more now

What do you have?

Linder 3-4 round
Sentrel 3-4
Morris 3-6
Hurns 4-6
Porter 5-7
Robinson 7-FA
O Donnel 6-FA

This is something a lot of "fans" forget when projecting players to the league. You have to be elite in one area to find your niche in a league full of talented people.

Linder and Hendo go round 2.

Morris round 4-5

I think Hurns sneaks into the 3rd

Perryman goes 4

Robinson and Porter UDFAs

Wrong as ****.

Move everybody back 2 rounds from what I posted.

So glad Perryman stayed.

I am thinking the formula is out there. Jimbo Fisher was an assistant to both Saban and Les Miles at LSU. As head coach he was able to convince the admins to fund what it took to win. The next coach at Miami should be a former assistant to a long term successful program. The modern day keys to recruiting and training are at these programs.
