Miami Commit McLaughlin Gains 40 Pounds, Shuts Down Recruitment

Wasn't McGlaughlin a TE only a year ago? I wasn't on the Zion Nelson bandwagon as the next Winston. Thought (and still think) he could be serviceable in 3-4 years, not year 1. McGlaughlin needs to redshirt, too. But he is both further along in terms of his physical development, and has a naturally higher ceiling than Nelson. I could see him being a big, positive factor on the line in his second year.

We are finally getting the quality and depth we need along the line. It's going to be nice to see Rivers, Walker, McGlaughlin, Big Baby, Rodriguez, et al. dominating the LOS for once.

Just need them to develop close to their projected potential and we will be good. Looking back over the years (starting in 2014) it is not surprising we are in this mess. In that 6 year period, we recruited the following 4 stars (not including transfers): KC Mcdermott, Trevor Darling, Bar Milo, St Louis, Donaldson, Herbert, Scaife, Reed, and Rivers.

And looking back, 2016 is the year where idk wtf we were thinking... we recruited ONE Oline prospect.... Tre Johnson. Also here are the recruits who had little to no impact from that class: Sam Bruce, Dionte Mullins, Jack Allison, Jovani Haskins, Cedrick Wright, Dayall Harris, Tre Johnson, Tyric Martin and Jeff James.

So out of the 19 enrollees 9 had zero or little impact. This was also the class with Richards (injury) and Irvin II so you could argue 11.

2016 OL class was as bad as it gets. You literally can't have a worse class. 2019 was pretty darn close with Nelson, El Gammal, Clark and Kennedy. Had to have been bottom quartile in ACC. Clark and Nelson have the potential to do something before they graduate. But we want championship level linemen. And I haven't seen that level of recruiting since Stoutland left... until now. I think our 2020+2021 lineman look and act the part coming out of HS.
 
If you look at the Wisconsin offensive line, they bring in a lot of 6’6” 240 pound lineman that used to be tight ends. They don’t get meaningful playing time until they are red shirts sophomores or juniors. They add weight and strength while maintaining their footwork

This is how you develop consistently good offence of lineman. Not throwing true freshman to the wolves

You guys gotta slow down with playing early or getting in the rotation talk...

OL's need a year in the strength program & time to develop before they hit the field.

Miami is not a program where we can have the benefit of the doubt of playing young OLineman too early, our issues offensively have been centered around poor OL development, the last thing we need is more TF's getting snaps.

McLaughlin is a promising prospect but under no circumstances should he see the field as a TF & I mean none at all.

Did yall forget that this kid has only played OT for ONE year in HS??

Ideally somebody like this, or Nelson, would not sniff the field until their RS Sophomore year
 
Would be nice if we did not need this kid until his Junior year. Then watch this kid break out.

Lets hope not because if thats the case none of our young guys have developed into what we hope they do. Honestly unless a recruit comes in and hes just an absolute beast I dont want to see any true freshman getting any meaningful time on the 0-line. JMO.
 
Kid shouldnt play until he is a RS soph if our guys above him show promise. I wouldnt rush him....he's a project tackle. Allow time for the weight gan and strength to get to his body.

Guys like Campbell, Nelson, El Gammal and company needs to develop to ensure of this. The only way we can create good depth and a real good line

Olinemen (outside of freaks) need to develop and get the right strength and understanding of assignments down

dont forget everyone nutting on themselves last year with the Zion kid who put on weight while still being able to dunk..... SIMMER

People need to stop comparing this kid to Zion. There’s a BIG difference. This kid has already weighed more than Zion did starting as a true frosh in college. He hasn’t even started his senior year yet. Gaining another 15lbs on a 6’7” frame with a college S&C plus nutrition program shouldn’t be bad weight at all. Compare him to Winston is more like it. A TE that blew up to tackle size.

I think most here agree he’s further along than Zion developmentally. The point is we can’t rush him like we did with Zion.

This is good news but he still should take a redshirt. The few clips of him in 1 on 1s looked good but you could see he obviously lacked strength which is expected.
 
This kid is one of my favorites in the class. He could be something special at the next level.
