Off field coaches or "analysts" have a variety of roles that can make a team better and really help them prepare for game day and be more effective ON the field:
-One role is ... coaching the on field coaches. That is one reason why Saban for example always brings in former head coaches or NFL position
coaches ... to work WITH his staff in every facet of their jobs. Helps them review how they practice, works with them reviewing film of
practice and games, to discuss what they are seeing.
-A HUGE role is in GAME PLANNING during the season. A defensive analyst will review an upcoming opponent's game film ... looking for weaknesses
... either personnel mismatches, scheme opportunities, or player "tells" ... hints of what they do in certain situations. They do THEIR preliminary
game planning before the position coach has time to get to it ... then they review everything together.
An idea of how impactful it can be is from a comment made by LSU's then head coach, Orgeron, after losing to Alabama. "Man I couldn't believe how well prepared they were for us ... they knew more about our tendencies and personnel than we did. Immediately after that game we went out and hired 5 more analysts to help us".
In the situation of UM with the hiring of Rod Right ... pretty sure he was brought in for 2 reasons .... he is an excellent up and coming defensive football coach but he is also known as a solid / impressive recruiter and has solid recruiting contacts in Texas where they do grow some pretty stout DL. His primary "analyst" is Jason Taylor. Pretty slick combination.
