Running Back to Safety isn't a lateral move at all. But I get the point your making.

Sean Taylor moved from Running Back to Safety when he came to the U. When you have great athletes, you have more possibilities.

I agree with the premise of tyrn´s post. Running back to safety would be considered a lateral move, so it´s an apple to the oranges he was talking about. We used to be known for moving fast players "down" a slot. For a decade now, we seem have been doing the opposite. Safetys to CB, LBs to safety etc. There have been signs though that Al is more into the old way of doing it. Deon Bush going to safety, Kelvin Cain to DE.

Now, McCord to LB is interesting, as it seems like it would be the old Shannon way of going for size over speed. But maybe it is just another hint at the 3-4 you hear more and more about in rumors.

As the point of discussion is the size/speed/athleticism ratio of players and their moving from one catagory to a larger/slower or a smaller/faster one, then safety to RB and vice versa is a lateral move. They are pretty much equivalents of each other from that standpoint.

Not too impressed, he played DE in all those clips. Why are we after so many DEs trying to convert them to LBs? That has never worked here before. Remember MRob?

Ya I remember MRob...the LB that moved to DE homey. I get what your saying but your example was about as ***-backward as you can get.

I believe you sir are the one who has it *** backwards, MRob played strictly as a pass rushing DE all through HS and had great numbers, but was projected as an OLB by Rivals, was a 6.0 4 star OLB based off of athletic ability and the fact that he was 6'1 or 6'2 and 220 running like a 4.4 (the prototype OLB). All of his highlights were from the DE position and we recruited him to play LB here.

LB and DE are to completely different positions and DE is IMO 10 times easier than LB. (I played both DE and MLB in HS)

Once he got here we realized that he didn't have it between the ears (read the offense and react in a split second like Spence, Perryman, Vilma etc...)to play LB here.

Remember that LB is a very cerebral position that takes a lot of experience at playing the position to be UM caliber at it.

Once we realized that MRob would be a liability at LB we moved him back to DE to be a 3rd down pass rushing specialist b/c he was too small for an every down DE and never put on the weight to become an NFL caliber pass rusher.

So if you only followed MRob from the day he got here, then yes he started out as a LB and was moved to DE, but he def played DE in HS so you might wanna do some research next time before being a smart *** homey.

The only recruit who currently film is of them strictly at DE that I want to bring in as a LB is Mike Smith, and that is b/c #1 he jumps off the screen in his film and #2 he is dedicated to learning and playing mainly LB for his SR year b/c that is the position that he is being recruited for.

I would like to sign 4 LBs in this class with only one of them being the DE/OLB hybrid and that is Mike Smith, the rest IMO should have experience at LB, reading the offense and reacting from the LB position. I promise you it is a lot different than reading and reacting from the DE position.

I really wanna try to add 2 MLBs and 2 OLBs with only 1 (Mike Smith) being DE/OLB hybrid.

I would take Jaboree Williams at LB any day before Terry McCray, that's just my opinion.

Yes, but he is the only "tweener" or "hybrid" LB/DE I would bring in this class.

We need to land some more true LB that have experience playing that position in this class, and at least 1 if not 2 MLBs.

I realize you were being sarcastic, but I do think that Mike Smith unlike Taylor Cook and Terry McCray will be successful at LB mainly b/c he plans to start playing it this year instead of making the transition once he gets to college, and something about the way he moves, he has a lot of quickness to him that will translate well to LB. Now the only thing is to see how he diagnoses plays and reacts and covers from the LB position.

I just don't want a roster full of tweeners that are mainly used as 3rd down pass rushers when we have a serious need for every down LBs
