Once thought to be a mortal lock to transfer to Texas, it appears Max Wittek, the erstwhile USC quarterback, will be forced to pick another destination.

The Austin American-Statesman, citing a source close to the situation, wrote Wednesday “that the Longhorns are backing away from offering Wittek a scholarship for undisclosed reasons.” The development is more than mildly surprising as Wittek has visited Austin on multiple occasions, including the spring game.

To where Wittek will turn, if the report is accurate, is unclear, although he does have several options.

In addition to Texas, Wittek has visited Hawaii as well. Louisville is also thought to be a potential destination, while Pittsburgh has been part of the discussion too.

As Wittek will graduate this spring, he will be eligible to play immediately at any FBS program and maintain two years of eligibility.

Wittek was a four-star member of the Trojans’ 2011 recruiting class, rated as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the country. In late March, Wittek announced he would be transferring from USC in search of a better shot at playing time.

Texas got a commit from 2015 4* QB Zach Gentry so they are choosing long term stability and development over a possible quick fix to the program. Also being from New Mexico he is practically a Texas Local, where as Wittek maybe seen as an outsider. An with Wittek there that could turn off a 2015 kid that wants to hear he could start as a freshman.

Where as at Miami if we landed Wittek that would be a QB depth game changer overnight and allow UM to redshirt Kaaya, an give Kevin Olsen just a little more time to get his head out of his butt an focus 110% on being a leader an the Miami QB both on an off the Field. The issue with Wittek is his accuracy suffers because he relies on his strong arm to much, but he is smart so learning the play book in 3 months is not an issue, develpoing a rapport with the WR's maybe an issue, but his maturity should overcome that.

Wittek only started 2 games at USC; against Ga Tech ( 2013 sunbowl) & 2012 ND

Pass.
Golden needs to roll with who he's got and give them a chance to show themselves for what they are either good or bad so we can get the QB position settled sooner rather than later.

Golden shouldn't hesitate and offer him a scholarship..... Wittek looks really good in that Notre Dame game, he avoids the rush with his head always looking down field....
There's worse things to have then a QB with game day experience....

We need to make up our minds. Cant say Golden will now use the injury as a excuse and then turn around and say play the young guy and take our lumps.

I didn't watch the clip posted, but he was terrible in that game. A competent qb and USC wins

You don't ever "build for the future" in college football.

Last year we did, and Morris left.

This year we'll do it, then Duke, Flowers, and Perryman will leave.

Next year we'll do it and then Coley, Howard, and maybe even Olsen leaves.

College football is far too unpredictable with who's coming and who's going that you "build for the future", you always play to win this year.

I say offer this kid a scholly. If he's the best, you play him. If he's not, he sits.

Morris leaving was the real shocker that effed up our rebuilding plan?

and how exactly did we "build for the future" last season? this coaching staff was definitely all in last season. Things just took a turn for the worst when our heisman hopeful RB got hurt, our senior QB played like anything but that, and our defense...well...you guys know the rest

Enough with the excuse BS. If he can't win, he will be fired.

He can say any BS he wants, at the end of the day wins and money talk.
