Mark Pope (Rumor... apparently debunked already)

Peter Ariz. ... Seriously, wasn't he a Cooney gem. For whatever reason, the buzz had him as the best 7x7 football player in the country. Had me fooled, tbh.
Maybe that's the problem. He was great at 7on7 because there's no tackling. Every time he returned a kick, caught a ball, or ran a pattern through traffic he looked hesitant and unsure, like he was scared of getting hit.

Misconception is that Pope’s only issue was dropped passes. His biggest problem was his inability to beat press coverage and fear of contact. If a corner gets his hands on Pope, he’s done. Completely erased. You could counter that by playing him in the slot where he’d get a free release but your slot guy has to be willing to catch passes in the middle of the field where he’s going to take hits. Pope wants no part of that either. It’s why he dominated non contact 7 on 7 leagues but struggled in actual football games.

He has plus speed but that’s his only strength.
Totally agree. Just made a similar comment about his fear of contact before I saw your post.

He should have been scared of getting hit - I'm pretty sure I could break him in half and I've not played a proper contact sport for a decade (I don't consider squash or 'soccer' contact sports).

Makes sense, easy access to the okahumpka service plaza and all those sweet, sweet gas pumps

I actually believe his issue with drops has to do with his lack of concentration due to fear. You can't play scared. I get that he's not a big guy but either is Harley. The difference is, one catches the ball first before looking to avoid contact, the other looks to avoid contact before securing the catch.

Pope was beautiful in high school but got real ugly in college.

Lingard had very good straight line speed. When he hit a good gap hole (A or B) in high school, he was going for big yards or a TD. But, from the first time I saw his film, I wondered about his upright running style (he's such an obvious track guy it's laughable). I hoped he'd be able to work on technique.

The second thing that stood out to me was his wiry build: the guy's clearly strong, and has little body fat, but his legs were not thickly built like an ideal running back. He would have to use the upper body to gain mass at the college level, rather than evenly distribute. Not ideal.

In the end, it didn't work, and it really shouldn't be very surprising.

He should have considered converting to Safety

good for him. he isnt bagging groceries and instead will make a lot more money playing a sport for a living. cngrats
I don't think you realize that minimum contract for a CFL player is 75k a year on a 3 year contract, it's why a lot of ppl up north (including me back in the day) don't play cfl and just start our careers, cause it pays like junk.
