Stopping the run: Feel like the older guys are showing a lot of maturity. Green, Robinson, Porter really stepped up. OP and Chick also. OP stands out the most – tremendous spring.
What makes a good run stopper: At this level, we are looking for technique, leverage. The elite guys have it all. Their technique, leverage, conditioning (much improved) all play a big part. Play with good pad level, play with their hands, finish plays.
On the pass rush, how do you improve it? Sees a better pass rush right now. Chick is getting better, works very hard at it. Cain has given a lot off the edge. Mentions Dwayne H and McCord. From the inside, all the DT’s have shown the ability to get some push inside, beating guards 1-on-1, or slipping gaps. Kareem Brown (GA) is putting a lot of emphasis on it, helping the guys. Very happy with the progress, looks forward to guys who aren’t here yet.
What part needs to improve more – pass rush or stopping the run? Stopping the run allows the pass rush to succeed better. Gets someone is a 3rd and long, allows the pass rush (known passing down). Starts with being stout against the run.
On the secondary: Really fun to watch them grow. First spring for the majority of the guys getting the reps. Allows things to sink in and slow down for them. Easier for them to process info, good understanding of technique and adjustments. Very excited – excellent talent and playmaking ability. Crawford has taken a huge step since last year. Young safeties are coming alone too. Flash with big time playmaking ability. Look forward to Burns and Carter adding to that group.
How would you like to play the secondary (bump and run, off, etc.)? Boils down to the players, personnel, situation, etc. If you have ability to press, it disrupts timing and makes things harder. Use the press more on passing downs, as it can be a liability if it is a run play (nobody back deep if runner gets to the second level). Team will show multiple coverage, a look of looks similar to teams playing on Sunday.
If a guy stands out at the Spring Game, how much does that matter? We will look at the entire spring body of work. We have thrown a lot at the kids. However, definitely want to see what they do “when the lights go on.” Do not want to see freelancing or lack of technique.
Player most looking forward to? Hopes the veterans play like they have been in camp. Basically names the whole defense – excited about the group. Wants the guys to treat it seriously and show they have improved
Do you set defensive goals? Absolutely. Takeaways are the #1 indicator of winning (turnover margin). Want to be disruptive and take the ball way. Watch for strip attempts in practice. Want to make plays o the balls. Do pushups if you drop a pick. Easiest way to win a game. Turnovers can mask a lot. Has to start fundamentally, stopping the run leading to a pass rush.
