Has anyone seen them play this year and can comment on the team as a whole?
I watched both of their first two games.
NCState are masters at controlling the football and limiting mistakes. It's very similar to what we did a year ago- in that they do not take too many shots down the field and will try to let you beat yourself. It's somewhat surprising to see their offensive line struggle considering the experience across the board, but they have given up a lot of sacks already this year- and it wasn't just to Tennessee (3x) and UConn (6x). On top of that, despite some talent at RB, they are actually pretty **** awful running the football averaging a mere 3.5 yards per carry (100th in the country). They were even worse in 2011 running the football, so this is not "out of the norm" for them or a case of them facing two tough defenses to start the season. Glennon's statistically similar to what we've gotten out of Morris to begin this season. Outside of the awful game he played against Tennessee, he's pretty solid but not spectacular. As others have mentioned, he wilts under pressure and sprays the football. I'm not sure if our DL can generate pressure, but the reality is that NC State is just not that good offensively. The Wolfpack do a decent job of distributing the ball across the board, but it's clear they look for Quintin when needing a big play and Underwood when needing to move the chains/short yardage.
Defensively, it's one of the best secondaries in terms of experience and production we will face this season. They get their other starting CB back this weekend-- CJ Wilson-- and paired with Amerson, that's pretty deadly. Amerson set the record for interceptions a year ago in the ACC, and already has three this year. Tennessee was able to expose some of his gambling nature with double moves, but he's settled down. We have the athletes and the perimeter speed to challenge them, but I don't think we need to start airing it out from the first kickoff against this defense. We have a sizeable advantage up front, and their linebacker core is underwhelming. They are susceptible to the big play, even on the ground, so a game plan featuring Mike James and Duke Johnson should not only wear down the Wolfpack but also could lead to some big runs. This is a game where Morris just needs to manage the offense and pick his spots, and hopefully those big uglies allow us to continue ripping off runs at the 5 ypc clip that we have coming into this game.
On special teams, the Wolfpack have a very weak FG kicker, which could be the difference in this game. He's 1-4 from over 30 yards. A year ago he was 2-6 from over 40 yards, so not only does he not have range, but they're not likely to even bother attempting anything from beyond 43 yards. About half of their kickoff returns are returnable, but they do a decent job on kickoff coverage. They did a good job on returning kicks against Tennessee, so we'll have to be careful since our game plan seems to be to let teams try to return kicks against us. They broke a big punt return last week, but outside of that against Citadel, they haven't done anything in the punt return game.
There's no question in my mind that we are better than NC State. But after watching us take the bend but don't break game plan against BC and KState, and letting those teams move the ball with ease on us, I worry we'll do that same thing this week which could get us in trouble. I also hope that despite Morris having played phenomenally against Georgia Tech, we don't try to replicate that game plan when we should be able to run right at NCState. Asking our young team to win 3 straight ACC games to open the season (which we haven't done since 2004) is a tall order. Honestly, we should win this game by 10+ points, but I expect that we'll make a dogfight out of it and who knows what winds up the result.
