Linebacker Recruiting Question

I expect our LBs to look better this year because of coaching and a more LB-friendly scheme. Our defensive philosophy will be more fundamentally sound up front, which in turn will put our LBs in a better position to succeed than under the previous regime. Recruiting-wise, I'm not concerned. Still in it for a couple big dawgs, and I trust Cristobal, Steele, Strong, & company to bring in some real ones.

Facts. Coaching is elite (I don't use that term lightly). The position group while not great is looking dramatically improved both talent wise and maturity wise, physical and mental. I expect a major jump in productivity.

I'm especially looking forward to seeing what Keontra, Frierson and Chase Smith can do in the new scheme. Caleb Johnson will battle for a starting spot. And of course both Steed and Flagg return. ... who knows, maybe even Huff or Brooks makes an appearance.

If the rumors are true, we're sitting in a great spot for Malik Bryant. I think he becomes a MLB for us.

Sounds amazing. I think now that you mention the name he has been on our best wish list for awhile now thank you👍

Did you really start a thread with an overly broad title and then ask for it to be closed because a recruiting insider didn't respond to your question within 90 minutes on a Sunday morning?

I'm going to edit your title to help you out, but c'mon, man, you are way too old to be that impatient!
True sorry

Would sure be nice to see Huff and Steed and Brooks do something.

I think our current roster is decent at LB. I expect Keontra Smith, Caleb Johnson and Gilbert Frierson to be our starting backers (no insider information, just my preferred 3). Backed up by a solid veteran in Waynmon Steed, athletically intriguing Avery Huff, and future NFL talents in Chase Smith and Wesley Bissainthe (and maybe James Williams in the box every now and then), I think this will be an above average ACC squad. Just on coaching and scheme alone our linebacker play should be improved.

Regarding transfer portal, I think if there's a surefire starter/ All ACC caliber player (e.g. Mikel Jones) you take him, and I would fully expect Mario and staff to be all over that. But I feel that way about any All-Conference type player, regardless of position.

With recruiting I honestly have no idea, but I have full confidence in Mario and this staff's ability to identify and sign talented players on signing day. I think we caught a glimpse last class of the magic Mario can work and I think we should trust in them until proven otherwise. I know as a canes-fan we've been burned on signing day and had to settle for lower caliber players (especially w/ linebacker during the Diaz era), but I think we should just enjoy the season and let Mario do his thing recruiting without being stressed.

Agree on the above average. I've been one of the most negative posters on the boards about LB for years now, even when Shaq and Pickney were our starters. They were above average but not great. I'm expecting the players to perform at that level this year, with some potential for upside surprise because we have a couple of really good athletes in the Smith brothers.

I'm also expecting scheme and coaching to be lightyears better, so above average could look like shutdown. I'm very excited to see this defense for the first time since Manny's 2017 run (before OCs got wise to him). Should be fun to watch.

How do you veteran recruiting guys see our linebacker room developing on the recruiting front. We seem to be shoring up all the Manny screwups but I just feel like we are still in need here. I know we picked up a few transfers. Other than nailing down a top receiver do you agree and what are we doing about this ?
Within two weeks you'll be able to answer that yourself.

I'm confident Mario and staff will land at least 2 high caliber LB'ers for the future. In the short term we'll see solid LB play with Keontra, Caleb, Chase, Frierson and Bissainthe. I also see James Williams used as a hybrid LB in certain packages. Given new scheme, coaches and upgraded DL, LB play will be much improved.

I was watching Hurricane games when George Mira was the QB. What a stupid remark.
I mean, you’ve been a cane fan since before the Norman Conquest. You’ve got us all beat on the longevity front, drac. Doesn’t mean this thread isn’t super troll-y.

Plus, Bissainthe, Wesley. Mario called him the best player on the board last year and I think he grows into that mike spot.
