Things are really getting slow. Lets talk about some games coming up.

A game we seem to be overlooking a bit, Virginia Tech.

Can they really be bad two years in a row? We all know Logan Thomas sucks, but after being in the top 10 in defense which seemed like every year for a couple decades they fell out of the top 30. After having stars on both sides of the ball for years things have seemed to change.

Anyone got the scoop on what we're going to see from VT this season?

I posted this before on VT.

I expect another down year for VT. Logan Thomas is not too good at the QB thing. Another reason [for the down year] is they lack that great RB they normally have (David Wilson, Darren Evans, Ryan Williams or Brandon Ore), Logan Thomas was their leading rusher with 524 yards.

Key Losses: Corey Fuller (WR), Marcus Davis (WR), Vinston Painter (starting tackle), Nick Becton (starting tackle) and Bruce Taylor

Davis had 51 catches for 953 yards and 5 TDs

Fuller had 43 catches for 815 yards and 6 TDs

Dyrell Roberts (also gone) 33 catches for 400 yards and 1 TD

Just another footnote

Logan Thomas had 3000 passing yards and 18 TDs, he is losing 2168 Yards (72%) and 12 TDs (66%) from his offense.

Plus we get them at home again.

Beamer always puts together a fairly solid squad, and typically has them ready to play and play well. Except of course that 1 or 2 weeks where they lose to someone they shouldn't and spoil a decent season. Last year not really sure what the deal was with them last year. Didn't think losing David Wilson would hurt them so much. And as Consigliere said, we get them at home agin, which is righteous. I think we take care of business again this year. Hopefully without the luck of a fumble on the 2 yard line. And I will punch my TV in the square in the face if I EVER see this again:

they dont have anybody on offense that scares anyone

and the defense is meh

put a fork in em

I think as always this can be a tough game and VT has a good QB so that will always be a problem. But I think we should handle them rather easily.

I see no reason why we shouldn't roll them again. The days of them being relevant are numbered. As are our days of being average.

VT is high on J.C. Coleman a freshman that ran for 109/492 (4.5 avg). They expect him to improve, IMO I think he will too. They lost their three top receivers so they will be relying on new players to emerge

They have Auburns OC from last year. It's going to be interesting to see how he does. Auburns personel was not meant for his scheme but 114th in the national is pretty abysmal though. I'm sure a lot of Auburn fans opinions about him weren't too far from what we hear on here about D'Onofrio.

VT's Oline was very inexperienced last year, they sucked....Might be a closer game if they improve.....L. Thomas isn't great but may have a steady Senior year.

Great Thread.

QB: Logan Thomas has potential, he is a decent starting QB. He will still be drafted based off potential. He could bounce back but all signs are pointing towards him throwing many more interceptions. Losing his top two targets in Corey Fuller and Marcus Davis will hurt. He also is learning a new offense in his senior season that could turn out to be better or worse. VT plays great defense and Thomas should be used in the game manager role instead of the game changer role. Similar to the way they used Tyrod Taylor.

HB: I think J.C. Coleman is nice. He should have had more touches. Won't be surprised to see him breakout for a 1000+ yard season.
Backup RB, Michael Holmes is decent as well. Has to stay out of legal trouble. Should be him or Coleman as the breakout/sleeper RB this season and I won't be surprised.

WR: They lost their top 3 receiving targets from last season. But they look to start Dimitri Knowles and D.J. Coles. I don't know too much about Knowles but I do know about Coles. Coles was slated to start last season before and season-ending injury cost him the 2012 season. In 2011 he recorded 36 receptions for 480 yards and 3TD. He was/is a solid college receiver to me who looked like he could develop into someone good. It will be interesting to see if Coles can regain his 2011 form.

TE: Starting TE Ryan Malleck also returns. He recorded 17 receptions for 174 yards on the season.

OL: Is the weakest point of the team. VT will have problems with physical defensive lines this season. They are a big part to blame in Thomas' struggles and the struggles of the run game.

Defense: Bud Foster's 2012 unit managed a 7 win season with the defense in the top 32 in three different categories, total scoring, pass defense, and run defense. He continues to have great defensive units. They will still be running the 4-4-3 defense.

DL: The DL returns the entire starting four. The returning DL combined fo 20+ sacks and 50+ TFL. This group includes James Gayle, Tyrel Wilson, Luther Maddy, Derrick Hopkins, Dadi Nichols, and J.R. Collins. They were a solid group last season and should only improve under Bud Foster's guidance.

LB: Super Stud First Team All-ACC selection, and leading tackler Jack Tyler returns after recording 119 tackles. The Teams second leading tackler return as well in Kyshoen Jarrett, who recorded 83 tackles.

DB: Can't forget The DB's Kyle Fuller and Detrick Bonner Return. Fuller is an excellent CB. The next in line of the recent VT DB history.

Overall the defense is solid. The offense just needs to show up. The offense is in such a state of flux that they could go between 6-10 wins this year realistically.

knowles is a solid wr...has long speed...will have to stay on top of him

- i actually like the scat rb.....J.C. Coleman that kid hits the hole at top speed.

- ol..didnt impress me, qb is overratted as all ****....but their going to run him more with their oc.

- i dont expect their defense to b as bad....their small up front...they should have problem with our oline size.

As recent history shows VT never really been about that recruiting life. They are about that coaching life. There are a few schools like that in recent history. Mind mind thinks VT, GT, BSU and MSU right off the bat but I know there are a few more schools that don't really get top of the line classes but they always winning.

their recruiting numbers will ALWAYS be like that ...because their core reruiting ground is the tidewater area which has kids that are routinely low rated..(Look at Figueroa) ...the problem is their recruiting efforts down here has been thwarted (they usually steal a db or 2, and a few legit nfl level athletes)...uva has been doing a better job recruiting....so their talent level dropped a bit.

VT should have the best defense in the ACC this year.

They return most starters off a very solid defense last year.

They demolished FSU's rushing attack last year, the defending Clemson's offense total yards wise better than LSU or South Carolina, and Miami went multiple possessions in our game last year with 3 and outs.

This is true. Beamer and Co. has a well oiled machine in place. They look for their kids and just stick them into the well oiled machine. They never recruited top kids but send a bunch of kids to the draft and before last season (2004-2011) they had 7 straight 10 Win Seasons, 5 BCS Bowl Appearances and 4 ACC titles.

That was with the Beamer System in place. If Beamer could get a little better talent, I am sure some of those 10 win teams would be 11 and so on. On a side note, IMO Beamer may be done and Bud may need to take over with a good OC.

They have a good defense and Bud is a good defensive coordinator too.

I think with their stink QB and lack of running game, they may be in for a similar season overall though.

Don't be surprised if Josh Stanford is starting for them, kid is an athlete and solid receiver. Been watching him play since he was in school up here.
