Let's assume....

Coley better figure out a plan for dealing with Louisville's DL standing up and walking around while the QB looks at Coley for the play call. My suggestion is to pound the ball up the middle while they are standing up. Sure seems like you could gash them for 7+ yards everytime. But it requires the QB to make the audible, and stop staring at the sideline.

Second, they have got to implement an adjustment to the snap count. DL were teeing off on us all year, as soon as the guard tapped the center's leg.

These two basic fixes would go a long way.

They have a new DC and HC, who knows how UL will play on D?

In addition, Marcus Smith (DE) and Brandon Dunn (DT) are gone. Smith had 18.5 TFL and 14.5 Sacks (2 against us).

If you don't think they are going to review that game a try and match the same defensive scheme, well... I may need to draw you a cartoon.

Can you guys show me some video of this qb who can make good decisions under pressure, recognize and adjust for blitzes, effectively implement the short to medium range passing game, and learn to take what the defense gives you rather than forcing throws for the big play. Any ACC video would be appreciated.

What you guys are writing is what you hope happens, what we do KNOW for fact is the coaches would have rather had a struggling one legged qb trotted out on to the field than put Williams in. It wasnt even an option from comments from our coach, even after throwing multiple INTs. I know some just shrug things off in the sake of positivity but I like to look at things as they are so I am not jumping off a ledge come gameday. I want to be optimistic about the williams kid but I just dont see it.

This.

If you don't think this staff needs to be questioned on who they played and why, well I guess we will see soon enough when the season starts. Or if one of the other QB's beats him out. Which from your conclusion, should happen.

Something tells me the new coaches will review the bowl game, given that it is against the same team they will face in the fall. And if anyone reviews that video, it's pretty clear that we were completely dumbfounded with their DL walking around in circles. Our guys had no clue who to block.

As for the tapping the center to initiate the snap, we continued this nonsense the ENTIRE season, notwithstanding the fact that team after team kept killing us. it was almost comical listening to different announcers from subsequent games recognizing that the defense was jumping our count after the infamous tap.

And given our absolute failure to adjust to the "tap snap" fiasco, it follows that the new Louisville coaches may conclude that we will not adjust to the DL walking around in circles mess. In short, Coley better implement some counter before the game.

Yeah, I'm not counting on them to do something they haven't done for three years.

If they do that again you quick snap and power run the ball. Its obvious, and we didn't try it once in the bowl game.

My thoughts exactly. My head almost exploded during the game, bc we did NOTHING.

The prep and game plan for this game will tell us all we need to know. I think we already have the answers, but this may convert the last remaining posters that still believe in Golden.

We do nothing whenever the opposing team shows a new wrinkle. Again, look at the Wake Forest game, where even the announcers were wondering why we weren't adjusting to their wide split OL (similar to their comments about Louisville's wrinkle).

I didn't want to make this a thread about one particular opponent in the ACC. This was a total ACC performance.

Now that you have done that, here are my thoughts.

UL is not the same team. In fact, the way people don't know much about Williams and how well he will play...the same can be said about UL.

Before the fact that they replaced the WHOLE coaching staff (remember Strong was a defensive minded guy), here is what they lost:

1. Bridgewater (nothing needs to be said),
2. Preston Brown (starting ILB, led team in tackles),
3. Damian Copeland (starting WR, 58 for 780 Yards and 5 TDs),
4. Calvin Pryor (starting Safety, possible 1st round pick)
5. Hakeem Smith (starting Safety, All-American Conf Team)
6. DL (Smith and Dunn, see above), and
7. RBs (Perry and Dyer)

Now here is what they gained...PETRINO.

I like Petrino and think he is a tremendous coach. I don't think people know how well they will do in 2014. Tougher conference, key losses (heisman QB) and a new staff. Would you be shocked if they started a little slow?

Why does the whole message board have to believe a certain position? Who cares?

I agree that this staff is easily out-schemed but the staff adjusted. But this game isn't the best example IMO.

Against WF, they scored 7 points after halftime. In addition, of the 361 total yards they had 145 yards after the half. Not exactly dramatic numbers.

Does this need to be discussed in this thread?

It shouldn't take an entire half to adjust to something so elementary (see also Louisville).

But you are right, no it doesn't and I apologize for cluttering your thread.

+1 that snap count was the dumbest **** i ever seen... I seen some teams do it in the nfl tho...

I find it interesting that no one has mentioned Malcolm Lewis when going over the WR depth. I think he had a slump last year due to his injury the year before, but he is the perfect slot receiver that should allow Berrios to RS. He showed flashes his Freshman year before the GT injury.

That playcalling and looking to the sideline needs to go. There is nothing i hate more. Its a distraction when the QB could be scanning the field

I hope he gets back to his frosh form.

the defense produces the same exact result as 2013 and let's focus on the offense.

Will this offense produce more or less points in 2014 during ACC play?

I'm not sure I'm following OP.
If the Offense numbers improve, specifically 3rd down conversion and TOP, than the defensive numbers improve.
If we can get our offense to convert on 3rd down 45% or better and possess the ball 30 minutes per game, overall defensive stats improve.
Add to this an improved defense from a talent and experience perspective and we could see a TOP 30 defense.

If Williams or Olsen can be the field general types that know how to manage games and let the skill players do the work it would bode well for the overall success of the team.
