Let’s talk Defense vs. Syracuse

You guys keep calling Gadsen a te he isnt.

Hes just like his dad just a big wr, they play him out wide. We cant play any of our lbs on him other than maybe Pruitt in spot duty here n there

Their guy is they have a restrepo in the slot the hispanic kid and he can be a real threat. Need to bracket him

Im hoping this is the game our dl ggoes wild because they wll drop back 40 times..take the over.
The over/under opened at 65.5 and has already moved to 67.5.

And it STILL seems low.

I'm curious if we are going to look to dominate time of possession and run the ball, not giving McCord as many possessions as he would like and the defense coming after him.
We will run the ball because Syr is #118 against the run at 5.17 yds allowed /rush.

If we are leading late in the game, then yes , running the ball could seal the deal

This thread is for all posters on the board who want to discuss our defensive game plan against Syracuse.

McCord leads the country in passing yardage. He’s thrown the ball 50 times more than the next closest QB in division 1. It’s clear what they want to do. How do we stop it?

What formation would you run?
What coverages would run?
Are we blitzing McCord or praying our front 4 can get pressure on their own?

I live 5 minutes from the Dome. I’m surrounded by obnoxious SU fans. Everyone I work with says we’re going to lose. They have never been more confident. We can’t come out slow or we are toast. Defense needs to get some early stops/turnovers and our offense has to keep the pressure on them.
Maybe our best hope is to ball control somewhat with our run game and mix in some Cam passing and we can at least limit their overall number of possessions.

Our strength is our offense so we have to try to stay on the field on offense as long as we can and try to wear them down.

As far as D, keep building on what we did against Wake. Keep some of the position/player changes and if we get Brown and Alston back, we can be even more solid.

I definitely think we will have to bring some extra pressure to take McCord out of rhythm and make him as uncomfortable as possible. Hopefully we can force a turnover or 2.

Call me crazy, but this might be the game where we need Mario’s inner caveman prevail.

Pound the rock, extend drives to manage clock, keep McCord off the field.
Play like we have all season. You make your offense have to be perfect, limiting drives when you chew the clock up like that. Get a lead first and then you can do that

Why would they be confident? They’ve lost 4-5 games.

Counterpoint: if you have success on the ground, it takes the pressure off Cam so he doesn’t have to play hero ball.
I don’t want to see anymore of it honestly, it’s not needed.

The miss to fletcher (or Riley Williams on the same play) and that ugly int was glaring. Can’t have that in this next game or the rest of the season

I’m concerned they’ll pop us with some long runs. Not sure how they run when they do it (draws, etc.), but our Dline getting upfield expecting pass all day plus some of our tendencies at times (poor tackling, lapses in discipline, lack of speed) seems like a recipe for them to have a season-high in rushing.

They are playing good football of late.

They have seen our defense look like **** most of the year.

They are playing at home in front of what will be a sell out. The Dome is a tough place to play when they give their fans a reason to have hope.

I’ve been to the Dome several times. I don’t think they’ve had very good crowds all year but the bandwagon fans will show up on Sat. Canes defense needs to show up and kick McCord’s *** rather than look like they were partying all night (GT).

The Dome will be crazy Saturday — we need to do what we did against UF and take the crowd out of it early.

Don’t let McCord & their O get into a rhythm. Hit him hard early & often (without going overboard on all-out blitzes). Use some of our speed rushers selectively (Pickett & maybe even Lightfoot) on obvious passing downs, if their Tackles struggle with twitchy players.

Bring back some of the creative blitzes from last year, if we’re not getting pressure from our base defense. Make him move & throw off-platform. Confuse & rattle him.

Set the edge. Keep the same starting DEs we used against Wake so we play disciplined assignment football.

Spell Kiko with Popo to keep him fresh. Play Pruitt as it seems like his speed, athleticism & coverage skills are well suited for this game.

Force them to get the ball out fast to limit explosive plays & keep everything in front of you.

OJ & Porter can likely win their matchups using technique. Damari can also, if he’s at full speed. Our other DBs should play a physical brand of ball (similar to what FSU did to our WRs).

Play downhill & attack. We play best on D when they are bringing it (instead of reading & reacting).

Start fast (get up by two scores & then control the clock using our RBs & TEs).
