Alabama had its five-star offensive tackle commit Alex Leatherwood on campus last week for the majority of the week.
The 2017 tackle made his first trip back to Tuscaloosa since earlier this year, and enjoyed the camp atmosphere.
“Probably the good prospects that were there and stuff like that,” Leatherwood told BamaOnLine of what stood out about the experience. “The competition between the DBs and the receivers and stuff like that. It was just a good camp overall.”
Leatherwood’s relationship with offensive tackles and tight ends coach Mario Cristobal is one of the primary reasons he committed to Alabama in the first place.
It was offensive line coach Brent Key that the five-star tackle wasn’t all too familiar with.
“I spent a lot of time with the both of them last week,” Leatherwood said. “(Key) is a great coach.”
The Pensacola product spent a lot of time with head coach Nick Saban throughout his stay.
“For like most of Tuesday it was just me and him walking around scouting out people,” Leatherwood said.
Leatherwood was one of the top recruiters for four-star JUCO tackle Elliot Baker, who committed to Alabama last Monday evening.
“I feel real good about it,” Leatherwood said. “I was the one who really got him onboard. I was convincing him that me and him could both make early impacts, and the importance of needing tackles and stuff like that.”
Leatherwood kept tabs on other prospects as well.
“A few other receivers, but I mainly worked with the O-line guys,” he said.
While no official visit has been set for Alabama, Leatherwood has a pretty good idea of which weekend he’ll be back on campus.
“Nine times out of ten it’s going to be the Iron Bowl,” he said.
The five-star tackle doesn’t have any visits to other schools planned, and expects to be back in Tuscaloosa next month for the second summer session camp. Florida is hosting a satellite camp at Leatherwood’s high school on Friday.
As far as Leatherwood’s commitment status, he answered as to whether he’s still a firm commit to the Crimson Tide.
“Of course,” he said.
Standing at 6-foot-6, 315 pounds, Leatherwood is rated the No. 5 offensive tackle and the No. 19 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
He committed to Alabama last June upon receiving an offer at camp.
