First of all I would not considered it a mistake if your LB steps up on play action. Most good LB's are down hill first type of guys and then they react to the play action. You must turn you head and run because you have to find the receiver in your zone. If you don't turn your head you won't find the receiver. Our LB's tend to stair in the backfield which lets receivers slip behind them. We play match up zone a lot for our under coverage. Which in generals terms means we take traditional zone drops then match up man to man when a receiver comes into our zone. You must remember that most QB's will read over-coverage with their pre-snap reads and attack the under-coverage with their progressions once the ball is snapped. So I guess my point is that our scheme is actually really good but our kids are undisciplined and won't turn their head and run they tend to stair into the backfield which makes it hard to cover anybody and our under-coverage ends up with big gaps.
