LB-playaction drop drill

Eddie sucks at this in games

This gives a little insight into what our philosophy is as it relates to responsibilities in the zones. I don't know if it could be said definitively based on this video, but it seems as if we aren't pattern reading and are purely spot dropping.

Would also really like to know what the coverage call was for the secondary on that VT play, because one of JoJo and Brandon seem to be out of position against that corner route.

For a second I thought that maybe this was a recent video and EJ was participating with the team. Then I realized that this was a video for last years group.

Not a fan of the whole, turn you're back to the ball bit. But what do I know.

no wonder we constantly get gutted....all our lb's do is spot drop...if they run this a whole lot theres a problem especially when guys dont trust it or arent comfortable.....

I see how KSTATE ate this up.....hopfully guys this yr our more comfortable in the defense and on 3rd downs can get us off the field....

Have been saying for a while this is like 80s type technique, we might as well put garbage cans out there. This is the reason avg QB can have success against us because our guys drop to spots and cover grass. I dont know how many times we will have a LB standing at his designated spot with a WR in his vicinity and he doesnt wall him off or even acknowledge him. This has been one of my main gripes of our Defense. We dont play alot of man because as Golden says we cant get to qb and that causes too many issues. But if we play this much man we should be able to execute at a higher level.

now we know why all of our backers look clueless while in coverage..

Donofrio seems to be way in over his head. Never turn your freakin back... you learn that **** in optimist

Again it's not that the system is wrong, it's that it's too much thinking for South Florida kids.

This drill is not a coverage drill. Please stop saying stupid things like "never turn ya back homie!". It's a "what to do if u make a wrong read on a play action fake". The point of it is that you can still make a play on the ball if u **** up by biting on play action.

The reason we look so bad running it is bc we are slow, we have kids who are way too young to be playing in this type of system, and bc our kids blow at playing read and react.

With all that said, I still blame the staff bc as I've said many times, it's retarded to run a complex read and react system with a bunch of South Florida kids whose best attribute is their aggressiveness and whose worst attribute is their mental experience (due to **** poor HS coaching/education).

These kids have too many things to think about in this system. The principles of Randy and Butch/JJ work really well here, and we are doing something totally opposite of that to the tune of the worst defense I've ever seen.

Spot drops. Nothing wrong with that they still have responsibility for intruders in their zones.

I love pattern reading but there is a ton of teaching and adjustments to make out of it. There is no perfect solution. I would guess many defensive coaches would prefer to play man if they knew the next play was going to be a pass.

Out of our starting front 7 from last year (Chick,Smith,Pierre,Green,Johnson/I'll give you Armbrister for the sake of your arguement,Gaines and Perryman) Only 2 of those kids are south florida kids who suffer from the lack of coaching you speak of. I don't really understand your point on read and react in regards to linebackers either. Every linebacker plays his key, reads and reacts. Kids just don't simply run to a gap and hope for the best. You can say the defense is too complex and not what you would run but saying the kids aren't mentally capable of running it right now specifically south florida kids is a cop out answer.

Lol at all the Monte Kiffins in this thread. You ******* think a line backer can "shuffle step" or backpedal fast enough after they've bitten on a play action fake to catch up with a WR or TE that's running a route in the zone they are supposed to be covering. This is a drill to teach you how to recover after you've ****ed up. You guys seriously need to stop taking yourselves so serious. None of you are better at teaching defenses and defensive techniques than Coach D. This guy had a **** school like Temple in the Top 20 in defense his last year there and had 3 or 4 first/second rounders from that defense.

Some bad posts in this thread.

We had to play alot more zone than we wanted to for the beginning of last season and the LB's weren't very good at their drops either. GrozDozer hit the nail on the head. And if you think that video is evidence D'Nofrio is a bad coach then you must think the same thing about Golden.

this is also why we are vulnerable to the qb running when nothing is open immediately bc the qb takes off after his first read is busted and the lb's backs are turned

Again, this is all part of what I've said many times is a completely acceptable and effective defense.

It's not working with out athletes bc they have to think too much.

The drill itself is completely fine.

Just curious - What would the LBs look like if they hadn't "fvcked up" and misread the play action? Would they already have enough depth to shuffle/backpedal and keep their eyes on the QB?

I dunno already dropping back into their zones i guess? The drill is how to recover from biting on a play action. Anyone listen to it?
