LB Corp Next Season

I think Armbrister sticks around. Guy has a ton of potential, just raw. Not everyone can be a star from Day One, and he was a first year linebacker.

he is terrible, always out of position. cornelieus has more upside

Armbrister was a RS FR who just moved to LB. Think he has time to develop.

Unfortunately he was a sophomore.. played STs as a frosh. I like him though there were times where he blew off some blocks and looked dominant.

We're going have a real solid LB group who will bring so many different looks.

According to his profile he did not see any action in 2011:

Interdasting.. I swore he played.

We only lost 1 of last year's 'Backers [Buchannan].
But so far Al has recruited 2 new ones [Figuereo & Bond] and should sign 2 more local guys [Thomas & Grace]. In addition, we're still after Foster and Powell, with a chance of landing one.
That's possibly 5 new 'Backers --- all quality players!

Question -- If your name is Cornelius or Armbruster, do you sign a lease on an apartment for next September? And if you're E. Johnson, do you start to mature & wise up?

It looks like Al is tryin' to upgrade this group. Whaddah think?

solid fn post

Some of you calling for Ambrister to be run off were probably the same ones calling for McGee\Wieclaw to be run off a few years ago. Point is I will defer to the coaches on who should and should not stay on the roster.

Not even close.

yeah no. Armbrister was a major project from the get go. McGee had/has elite measurables and was a high ceiling prospect. Armbrister was a ST fill with solid backup role as upside

McGee just needed some real coaching. Armbrister is just not good enough to play at this level.

I don't expect Eddie Johnson to make it through next season. He'll probably f up again sometime between now and the start of the season. The minute Al feels like he has a viable option, he'll probably cut him loose. The dude showed unbelievable selfishness in missing that UVA game. He was the difference between us winning and losing that game, so he's probably on a short leash. No question in mind if he wasn't a selfish ***** we win that game.

Gabe Terry is in the same boat. He's dangling by a thread. So we have a couple potential issues at LB. I'm glad Al is going after a large group, as he pointed to LB as a spot of need in this cycle.

Count me in with the guys who aren't ready to give up on The Millionaire either. It was his first year playing LB, and he made massive improvements from his freshman year as a football player. Seems like a determined guy who will pound the weights and eventually be a 230 pound man who understands the position and will put the plastic on you.

On pretty much every defensive play last year except that goal line play in OT against GT, we always had 1 if not 4 defensive players out of position. That's the reason our defense did so poorly last year. It wasn't a lack of talent of which we have plenty up and down the depth chart.
No matter how well coached a team is, if you rely on young, inexperienced players, you are going to get inexperienced play.
Just the way it is, like anything in life.

The roster needs to be purged every year if you expect to compete with the big boys for championships. Particulary so when sanctions are staring you in the face.

Golden is a class act and will be up front and honest with these kids. The bottom line though is he will have to make some unpopular decisions if he is going to get this team over the top.

I have followed UM football since 1984. I don't recall UM doing much "purging" in the 80s and 90s, when we were really good.

It's a different game now man, every one of those roster spots is valuable as ****.

Agree to an extent, but most of the purging occurrs when a new coaching staff comes in. I don't think Golden is going to kick his recruits to the curb just yet, especially a kid like Armbrister that has had 1 season at LB.

I'm not saying now, now were building depth we have to take kids who we can develop like Armbrister and make them legit,it's contributors. I'm saying for college football in general every year for many teams like LSU Bama Oklahoma Oregon that already have established depth there's a number of kids that get filtered out of the program who aren't up to par with the surrounding talent. Scholarships are not a 4 year guarentee they are renewed yearly

Don't forget that they lost Witt too, so 2 was the bare minimum in this cycle, with 3-4 being ideal considering the situations of Johnson/Cain. As of now it's looking like the minimum will be 3 (with Bond being a tweener) and holding spots open for elite guys who want in. That balance seems exactly right.

It appears that something will give at LB one way or the other. It will all be sorted out by fall.

QB is the same situation. With Olsen and Thompson we have 6 for next year. If you are the 4th string QB would you stay and be an All-American practice squat guy or transfer to Div 2 to start? I Believe our QB numbers will be around 3 or 4 by fall.

Oh, I would work at it in spring practice every year. If I wasn’t in the top 3, I would be transfer and be the starting QB for Valdosta State, who won the National Championship on Saturday.
