Lack of Deep Threat

As far as I'm concerned, Fisch showed KSU barely anything to game plan for against BC.
...and we still scored 34 points offensively. Not too shabby. That, if I'm KSU's DC, has me concerned. You've got all of this tape of us throwing it short 90% of the time, and that is about all you have to gameplan this year's Miami offense with. That's a tough spot to be in. Right now, we have mystery and diversity on our side. All the KSU DC knows from the BC tape is that they need to do the following:

1) Attempt to contain Duke Johnson, keep him from the big run.
2) Cover the short/intermediate routes as well as you can, and watch out for the WR screens.
3) Get pressure on Morris and see how he handles it (only sacked once against BC).

There wasn't much playaction from us, so we can throw that wrinkle in--which KSU probably wouldn't plan for all that much based off of this year's tape so far (last year's tape, sure). There weren't many shots deep, so KSU won't be as aware of it as they would have been last year. However, in going back and watching last year's tape, we threw the ball deep a bunch and burnt KSU's secondary a bunch. Benjamin, Hurns, and Dorsett all 3 had really good games getting open on post routes and double-moves.

If you're KSU's coaching staff, the question is this...which gameplan do you try to scheme for? The Canes you saw and defeated last year, or the Canes from last week at BC? Which tendencies of Jedd Fisch do you trust? Two starkly different gameplans to have to prepare for...the only variable that's really the same is big-play ability out of the RB's (Miller last year, Duke this year).

Also--to stat's point about having a different gameplan for every team...THAT is the true mark of a pro-style offense. While we looked more like a spread offense than we ever have in recent memory on Saturday against BC, they key thing is that we can do ANYTHING with the personnel we have. It's not just run what we run and hope the other guys haven't figured out how to stop it...it's strategic gameplanning to figure out what your opponent's weakness is each week, and then exploiting it as much as you can.

everyone pretty much covered it from different angles, but with what Duke did last week, James had some nice runs as well, the play action will come in big time in this game, they already know if they dont stop our run we will wear em out, when that safety steps in the box Morris already knows he gonna have a deep route available off the play action. I really think we can put up the necessary points to win, we just need some really nice stops from the D.

I doubt we see a new gameplan every week... This is Fisch style of play, short passes... He did it last year as well, its just that we fell behind so many times that we had to go deep to stay in games and it went fairly well...

Didn't we gain 500+ yards and score over 40 points last week? I've never been a fan of the spread but obviously something in the gameplan worked.

415 yards and 34 points (if you don't count the pick 6 and resulting PAT that the defense made).

We get more 1st downs via the run and we'll get more opportunities for play action - that's when you'll see some bombs.

To whom? That is the question.

I second the vote for Phillip Dorsett.

Fisch said in the post game interview that infact the goal was not to try to go deep but to stick to the gameplan and he was very happy that SMorris did exactly as he was told. I think J12 would have taken more shots down the field. BC came out playing us with cushion to defend against the deep ball and Fisch wanted to take advantage of that and he was successful. He did say there will be a different gameplan for each team and some teams will open themselves up for us taking shots down the field. I do not think its lack of a deep threat, just not in the gameplan for game 1. That's all.

Agree with this and like the fact that Fisch was patient and unwilling to go whipple and just chuck deep when the BC knew it was coming.

Hurns is going to have the most catches over 20 yards. good enough speed to get deep when you combine he's a good route runner and can go up to get the ball.

Dorsett and Scott will emerge as a deep threat. Like stated before, BC was so far off our receivers that we could hit short to intermediate routes any time we wanted them. no need to go deep if they are willing to give away 8 yrds a pop.

don't over analyze week one.
