2016 4* DT Kyree Campbell has been denied admission by UNC, no doubt this is fall out from UNC being me academically stringent due to their NCAA problems.

According to Scout UNC has offered Campbell placement options for JUCO or Prep School.

DT Signee Kyree Campbell Denied UNC Admission - North Carolina - Scout

Former UNC DT signee Kyree Campbell (Woodbridge, Va.) will enroll at Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary Prep, per Campbell's high school coach Gary Wortham.

Wortham said Campbell will enroll August 21. Campbell will re-open his recruitment. He plans to enroll in January at the college of his choice.

Campbell finds new home

Miami has 1 scholarship remaining for the 2016 class even after Bama Transfer of Maurice Smith arrives. So adding a 6'5" 310" big athletic D-Tackle that is extremely quick off the ball to the 2016 Class would be great. He is at least worth a long look, those kids from Virginia usually turn out pretty good.

Not to mention his HS Head coach Gary Wortham used to coach & teach at TC Williams HS (the school from Remember the Titans) so you know the kid is tough. Wortham also taught Campbell's parents when they attended TC Williams HS.

I say give it a shot, however, I have two questions...
1) If he had academic issues getting in UNC wouldn't he have an even harder time getting in Miami?
2) If we don't use our final scholly for 2016, does it roll over to 2017?

What makes you think he can get in Miami?

if Richt can get D. Mullins admitted then Coach Richt can get this young man into Miami. Not to mention former UM commit who flipped to UNC James Pierre was denied admission by UNC earlier this summer, but was recently admitted to Syracuse for this august. So if a kid is borderline clearly UNC admissions is choosing to ear on the side of caution and denying the players.

GO watch Campbell's highlights and tell me he is not worth the horse trading with UM admissions it would take given quality of UM's 3rd sting interior dline.

Pete has said multiple times that the staff is good with the dts on the roster. Let it go, man

1) You might be correct, but UNC is in a whole heap of trouble over academic cheating, so they are probably much tougher now than we are.
2) It would still be available for 2017. Bottom line is, do we go after the kid?

That was based on whom was available as unsigned 2016 DT's at the time. Are you telling me that this kid does not project to be better than lets say current UM dlinemen Ryan Fines. Campbell's immediate availability should changes things and worth the look at Virginia's 12th best rated player for the class of 2016.

Every recruit is a different story. Jim Morris told me he had a baseball recruit turned down by UM Admissions and the recruit later sent Morris a copy of his acceptance letter to Harvard where he ended up going. I have no idea what would make the difference besides the usual SAT scores, GPA, etc. Maybe the baseball recruit's parents were grads of and/or donors to Harvard.

Here is how I frame the scenario:

We may be good at DT now. Im not emphasizing now, just saying we are good. However, this kid wasn't an option 5 months ago. If he was actually good enough to play here, and there is apparent variable change, why not look into the situation?

I should have kept reading, you said it better than I did!

Agreed. Generally speaking, I wouldn't mind another top-flight DT on the roster (in addition to Ford for next year)....

If you have above average or great DTs, you'll have an above average defense as a minimum....

The most important position group on the team, in my opinion....

You can never have too many good DTs.

The staff is fine with where they are at DL, I can't see them taking away a possible DB scholarship opportunity for a DT.

Absolutely you get him in. Dt is the 2nd most important position in college football imo. You stack talent there every chance you get.

Astcloud11 The game is won up front in the trenches not on the back end.

At this point it is better to take that open scholarship from 2016 fill it with a high quality DT now then hope to land an additional DB. After hypothetically adding Campbell, Miami can then adjust the roster in the spring with roster management through transfers. 6'5" 310lbs linemen that move like Campbell don't grow on tree's.

Watch his Senior highlights and tell me when you have seen a 0 or 1 Tech move like that, the kid intercepted 2 passes! No to mention outside of Anthony Moten and Kendrick Norton, ranked as the nations 26th best DT Campbell would be the highest rated DT to sign with Miami in the last 2 years. Rankings aside (because courtel Jenkins has shown rankings can undervalue kids) Campbell is a player and with coach kool's guidance he could be force in the middle.

The game may be won in the trenches, no denying that. However, you still need corners. Which, if we have one injury in the secondary to either Colbert, Elder, or Redwine - we're screwed. Depth in the secondary is a must.
