Anybody have the list of our KO coverage guys last yearr?

Thinking about this year....
Bond
Terry
Carter
Burns
Grace
A Crawford
Blue
Hope
Kirby/Gaines

.... there's a lot of speed/agility there and some names on that list that will straight take your head off. Depth at LB/DB should pay big dividends here. Even scarier if guys like Perryman, EJ, Bush, Scott get to do it. I assume some of the WRs will be involved too.

Something worth mentioning, swag. I brought this up on "another board" - the point is guys like Fentress, Swasey, et al, will be replaced by the Kirby's and Carter's of the world. As it is, our coverage units were already PRETTY good - you infuse those units with grade A athletes and you'll see some special units.

besides, our defense needs long fields to play against. Our coverage units will be big for our defense.

Throw Figueroa in that group as well.

Our return group should also get a boost with Elder, Coley, Burns and Carter. There is absolutely zero reason why Dorsett should be returning punts. He's not productive enough there and he's too valuable as a receiver.

Yep, forgot to mention Figs. He's going to be a dynamo on coverage units. I'm predicting a JWeaver type impact on STs.

D, if Dorsett shouldn't return punts, who should?

Yall remember the days when we would kick the ball off and our whole KO team would be down there right after the returner caught the ball? There was no chance of getting to the 20. Even when the ball was booted for a touchback our KO team would run all the way through the endzone together. We had unreal speed on our KO team. I think we're getting back to that.

Never seen a guy of his stature with such little wiggle.

I like Elder or Coley there. Carter was also a good punt returner in HS, although he may have outgrown the position. I like Burns and any one of the three guys I just mentioned as KR when Duke's not doing it.

D - are the folks that matter as impressed and hopeful with Elder as we are, or was he a "eh, we got a late spot, so let's take him" type? Just a little confused with why we didn't press harder for him earlier.... would love to know what was discussed with him pre-signing day.

I think Dorsett has some wiggle in the open field but, as we've seen, is not a "make you miss in a phone booth" guy. One of those who gets pegged a certain way just because of stature. Pure deep guy who we need to hit on more slants, in my opinion.

Coley, despite being lankier, is a way better "slot" type that can make you miss right away...and thus much better as a punt returner.

Ideally on punts we would put Elder or Coley and then rotate Burns, Duke, Dorsett, Carter and whoever else on kicks. Either way I love this problem. Much better than a few years ago when we had to put a freakin' tight end out there.

Agreed, he'll make guys miss on little jukes at full speed but isn't a hester type at all. He does have better moves than people give him credit for.

I've had the same questions and to be honest, I don't know the answer.

However, I suspect that Elder's name will generate a ton of buzz once he gets in the program and people see how competitive and quick he is.

Don't forget the Crawfords. Antonio was pretty electric with the ball at Plant and Dallas seems like the perfect punt returner. Lots of wiggle.

Lost track, but Fentress returns in the fall, right? If so, wouldn't be too quick to dismiss him from coverage teams.

I'm confused. I thought Coley was like a big target at WR kind of like Andre Johnson or at worst a Hankerson. those types don't return kicks do they?

I agree with the Crawfords comment. I think it should end up being of of the two of them. I dont think Coley is a return guy at the next level, but maybe. Or I see a guy like Elder, shorter with lots of quicks and better than average acceleration....
