Kickoff coverage

That’s my thing… the effort seems like it’s there. Young and hungry kids going down to cover and trying to lay the wood.

Just lack maturity and awareness. Why it’s not kicked out the back of the end zone every single time anyway is a mystery to me before I even worry about the coverage
Kickoffs are sometimes not a specialty for place kickers. At my school, our kicker had the same issue but is also our school leading scorer. Currently is a journeyman in the nfl.

Yeah if JB can knock it out of the end zone then wtf are we really doing
I really don’t know. It’s concerning we keep attempting thinking that’s something that can happen with more reps. Murray can now play without redshirt being a factor.

Hoping it doesn’t hurt Andy in the NFL. No doubt he’s one of the best place kickers I’ve seen since I really started watching/following college football in depth as a teenager 15-20 years now.

Don’t watch NFL at all so I really don’t know how the new kickoff works but maybe that helps his chances

Honestly that new kick off is a game changer. It will help him and other college kickers. Before kickers had to be all in one with kick off, onside and squibs. Unless you defer to a punter who is able to do those things.

He a monster college kicker. He even improved from last year by bringing the trajectory of his kicks ups on fgs. Thought that wf fg was text book. I’d be shocked if he didn’t get a serious shot like his brother.

I guess they want to give the young guys an opportunity to make a play rather than simply running wind sprints?

It's baffling either way.

Borregales kicked it deep into the same endzone after the return for a TD so the decision to kick these short appears to be strategic vs. wind impaired or not enough leg, etc.
If that’s the case, then just tell him to kick it deep into the end zone every single time from now on and that eliminates this problem right then and there. I’m sick of seeing these short kicks.

Ray Ray not at least coming up to fair catch punts is frustrating. Watching him let them bounce for 10-15 more yards. It’s not that difficult to fair catch punts. I’m not sure what our strategy is back there. Special teams/coach needs to be reevaluated after the season.
And their lies the problem, we don’t have a special teams coach. so Mario better hire one in the off-season because the special teams have been unacceptable

kick off coverage is reserved for underclassmen trying to get noticed by making plays and showing effort. I would’ve honestly pulled some of them off for walk ons to make a statement after Louisville.

Said in the game day thread it’s time to let Abram Murray to kick offs because Andy simply doesn’t have the hang time.
That argument is uninformed lunacy in the Louisville game ,there was a discernable wind from the left
Compare his kicks to most opposing kickers. When a returner catche's inside the five they have been tackled for more than 100 years. The incidence of penalties often make returns a negative. Finally hang time is irrelevant when kicked through the end zone.

Multiple there dispute the impact of the wind concern at Louisville.

Ray Ray isn't very good. He should transfer. Personally, I'd put restrepo back there for the rest of the year.
Absolutely, at least Restrepo would catch the ball and not let it bounce for an extra 10 or 15 yards of loss field position.

My initial response was to someone asking why they’re trying to put it at the one yard like the nfl.

Hang time is the foundation of punts and kickoffs for special teams. When you line-drive a kick with no hang time to the one-yard line, you’re putting your kickoff coverage team at a major disadvantage. It prevents them from getting downfield in time and gives return blockers forward momentum, which is already a problem for a poorly coached unit with disrupted coverage lanes.

If he’s capable of kicking it out of the end zone, why not do it? The Louisville kicker didn’t seem to have any issues with the wind. Honestly, I didn’t notice any wind at all on what was a perfect Saturday for Wake Forest.

You’ve kind of answered your own question: just kick it through the end zone, and none of this becomes an issue.
