Randy landed a number 1 ranked class his first full recruiting cycle. When you take over a program, its easy to sell what you "will do" without the responsibility of backing it up with what you have or haven't done. Couple that with having plenty of playing time to offer and you have a pretty reasonable sale to make. Lots of coaches do quite well in their first class or two at a school. Hugh Freeze is a great example of that.
Though I myself follow recruiting, I always get tickled by people crowning these bottom dwellers that get hot for one class and claim to be on the rise. Especially so far from signing day. If he has a top 5 class in February, crown his as an excellent recruiter, but even that won't mean much if they don't produce on the field, and they are a few years away from that. If theres one thing that recruits aren't, its patient.
