I don’t think recruiting will be a problem. I don’t see a way you can maintain winning by relying solely on the portal.I think like most things, it is not black and white. You mention FSU and UGA, but those teams were/are coming from completely different situations (at least by the time Norvell got to FSU). UGA can have players leave and not have to worry about it b/c they already have 2 more kids on the roster who can step in and play; FSU did not have starting caliber players never mind backups who could play.
I have no idea if Norvell will be successful in the long run, but it seems that his strategy was to use the portal get players that could contribute right away to show recruits what was possible and that seems to be paying off this year in recruiting (so far anyway).
My concern is if Mario relies too much on recruiting and/or can't get decent players at positions of need in the portal, that we may not end up getting the recruits b/c they take time to contribute to the team in significant ways and a couple of year of losing and/or being terrible at a particular position and you lose your momentum (chicken or egg). With the ability for players to transfer so easily, it is critical that coaches find the right mix of bringing in portal players who can play now so 1) you don't lose other good players who want to play on a team that doesn't suck and 2) you can show recruits potential of what the team could be.
Even in the nfl you need a good team dynamics and culture.
People can make fun all they want and say “mARIo wAnntS culTURe bro”
But in a city like Miami you better get players with that culture of focus and discipline.
This isn’t swamp land and trailerviille.
I remember a former player in a podcast when he was asked about our bowl game a few years ago in Louisiana . He said “I can see why other teams have their sht together when they come to a place like this. There is absolutely nothing to do outside of football” it’s boring as ****.
The transfer we got from vtech a few years ago at d end also said something similar when they asked him about the lunch pail culture at vt. “We had nothing to do but hang with each other in the building”.
“At Miami we had players living all over the city and they were all out doing different things and we really couldn’t build a bond”.
Now look at what kam said on the last Miami Flo podcast when they asked him what his plans outside of football this summer:
“We got places to go and games to win. My hobby is football” “I’m taking classes to graduate early” “I do t have any time for fun right now”
“You don’t have to check on me I’m at the faculty right now”
Big difference and the results speak for themselves.
