Kamalu, Gilbert, and Renfrow All Cleared

It looks like walk-ons are gonna take a hit. Can't be helped. There is no room. If the current roster on UM's site is correct, we gotta chase off about 7 walk-ons, or maybe a scolly guy here and there.

Who are the non walk-ons that might be chased off?

None! But some of the injured guys (Dye, Isadora) don't count. That Golden kid may sit for a few weeks. lol

With all the studs on the Oline, plus the ones committed, Wells might be one on the hot seat.

Watched some Wisky games from last year on the Big10 network. Gilbert started the 4 games I watched. Against MSU and PSU he didn't play a lot of 1st down plays, played mostly on 2nd and 5+ and 3rd and 4+. Not soft against the run though by any means. Wisky chose to go with more stout guys on the obvious run downs against run heavy teams. Against Nebraska and OSU, teams with more mobile QB's, he played a lot more on 1st down as well. I expect him to play a lot against spread teams in our conference, although he may play big minutes against UF due to Driskell's running ability. He is only about 245lbs so I could also see where they may want Chickillo and Green/Pierre playing end against UF's physical run game. How he acclimates in practice will likely tell the story about minutes against UF. Looking at his stats, he lead all their DL in TFL and QBH, 2nd in sacks, forced 3 fumbles too. Will definitely help us.

Bicho will just leave this right here. This guy is perfect for us if he is healthy. We have no proven speed edge rusher on the roster and this guy is just that.

He also plays well in space against spread teams and reads and reacts well.

He is no Clowney but surely light years better than Green as a pass rusher.

CORAL GABLES — Since training camp began seven days ago, mysterious players have been spotted on the sideline. Large players. Ones that look like defensive linemen.

Miami confirmed the identity of two of those players on Saturday, announcing the addition of defensive end David Gilbert and defensive tackle Justin Renfrow. The school also cleared Ufomba Kamalu, a former junior college defensive end. All three players participated in Saturday’s practice.

Gilbert (No. 11 in your program) is the most intriguing addition of the three. He played in 14 games for Wisconsin last season, finishing with 42 tackles, including 9.5 for loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles, earning an honorable mention spot on the All-Big Ten team. In 42 games for the Badgers, he had 79 tackles (14.5 for loss) and 8.5 sacks.

Gilbert (6-foot-4, 247 pounds), who played at Oakland Park-Northeast High, will vie for playing time at what UM calls the “rush” position, a pass-rushing defensive end/outside linebacker when Miami switches to a 3-4 setup. The main options there are senior Shayon Green, senior Kelvin Cain, sophomore Tyriq McCord and promising freshman Al-Quadin Muhammad.

Gilbert’s will push those players — if he’s healthy.

In April, he said his career was over due to a series of foot injuries. He missed most of the 2011 season because of a broken right foot and missed Wisconsin’s spring practices after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage in that same foot. Soon after, announced his retirement from football.

Renfrow, a 6-6, 310-pound tackle, is a fifth-year senior who will wear No. 78. He came to Virginia as a three-star defensive end, but did not produce much — 18 tackles in three seasons, 11 of them last year.

Kamalu, who signed with Miami in February, is a pass-rushing defensive end with major size (6-6, 285). A native of Nigeria, he graduated from Starr’s Mill High in Fayetteville, Ga. and played two seasons at Butler (Kan.) Community College, where he was rated as a two-star prospect. A profile in the Atlanta Journal Constitution said his recruitment was slow due to academic issues.

He was on UM’s roster as No. 90 but was held out of practice as he awaited clearance.

Transfer hopeful Julio Derosier, a junior college defensive end, was spotted watching practice. Miami has not cleared him to participate.

Looking at Kamalu`s gamelog from last year indicates his best football is ahead of him. Look at how his numbers improved as the season went along. Had a monster championship game against Iowa Western. Can`t wait to see what he can do against D-1 comp. If he did indeed RS his first year of JUCO, as rumoured, and is classified as a Soph, we may really be onto something here.

This is some good research here.. I like this new guy

Pierre will be our guy in 2014. Kamalu and Hamilton need to grow into Defensive Tackles. Then we need to bring in two DTs for next year - one of which needs to be a plug.

Let's get this **** done.

3 reactions to that video:

If he's healthy, he's going to help.
For him to help a lot, we may need to play him in the 9 tech some.
I'm ******' pumped.
