CORAL GABLES — Since training camp began seven days ago, mysterious players have been spotted on the sideline. Large players. Ones that look like defensive linemen.
Miami confirmed the identity of two of those players on Saturday, announcing the addition of defensive end David Gilbert and defensive tackle Justin Renfrow. The school also cleared Ufomba Kamalu, a former junior college defensive end. All three players participated in Saturday’s practice.
Gilbert (No. 11 in your program) is the most intriguing addition of the three. He played in 14 games for Wisconsin last season, finishing with 42 tackles, including 9.5 for loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles, earning an honorable mention spot on the All-Big Ten team. In 42 games for the Badgers, he had 79 tackles (14.5 for loss) and 8.5 sacks.
Gilbert (6-foot-4, 247 pounds), who played at Oakland Park-Northeast High, will vie for playing time at what UM calls the “rush” position, a pass-rushing defensive end/outside linebacker when Miami switches to a 3-4 setup. The main options there are senior Shayon Green, senior Kelvin Cain, sophomore Tyriq McCord and promising freshman Al-Quadin Muhammad.
Gilbert’s will push those players — if he’s healthy.
In April, he said his career was over due to a series of foot injuries. He missed most of the 2011 season because of a broken right foot and missed Wisconsin’s spring practices after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage in that same foot. Soon after, announced his retirement from football.
Renfrow, a 6-6, 310-pound tackle, is a fifth-year senior who will wear No. 78. He came to Virginia as a three-star defensive end, but did not produce much — 18 tackles in three seasons, 11 of them last year.
Kamalu, who signed with Miami in February, is a pass-rushing defensive end with major size (6-6, 285). A native of Nigeria, he graduated from Starr’s Mill High in Fayetteville, Ga. and played two seasons at Butler (Kan.) Community College, where he was rated as a two-star prospect. A profile in the Atlanta Journal Constitution said his recruitment was slow due to academic issues.
He was on UM’s roster as No. 90 but was held out of practice as he awaited clearance.
Transfer hopeful Julio Derosier, a junior college defensive end, was spotted watching practice. Miami has not cleared him to participate.
