People forget that we once had a reputation as one of the great DL factories ever: Ted Hendricks, Bob Tatarek, Rubin Carter, Eddie Edwards, Don Smith, Don Latimer, Jerome Brown and others. Somehow, we haven't had a dominant DL since the 2001 team, with Wilfork. None of the aforementioned guys came from Juco, as I recall.
We actually have an advantage over the SEC schools, something that Beau Sandland pointed out: the SEC schools will not take some online courses. That locked Sandland out of all the SEC schools. That's why his final three were ASU, Nebraska and UM. One of the factors in favor of the SEC schools is probably the extensive Juco network in Mississippi. Many of the kids are from SEC states. Some of them are not the greatest students and still have problems getting into UM even after Juco.
One great kid we took from NW Mississippi, I think it was, was Cortez Kennedy.
A year after Kennedy, another great OL/DL prospect was Eddie Blake, from the same school. He was on our sideline during the '89 Notre Dame game. I asked him and he said he was coming to Miami. Ended up at Auburn. I guess he couldn't get into Miami. He was from Tampa. We just haven't recruited that well at DL. We get a five star from Nevada, but nobody seems to think he's that good. Some of our best DLs had no stars, like Russell Maryland.
