“Accountability“, one of Mario’s core pillars…
That should be one of the biggest drivers in firing Gattis. I don't think this year's O abomination lands 100% on Gattis's shoulders.
He did a solid job at Michigan and won the Broyles. He didn't suddenly forget how to coach. However, he didn't seem to have a good feel for playcalling, at least with our current roster and at the end of the day, Mario has a decade's long contract and Gattis doesn't.
There needs to be a blood sacrifice, so the local townships (ie. players and coaches) understand that underperformance will not be tolerated in the new regime.
As a man, husband and father, I do feel for him. When he accepted the job, I'm sure he had no idea (nor did anyone) the internal corruption+the injuries we would get smacked with this year. If our OL was in better shape and our starting QB had not gotten injured half way through, would he have fared better? Of course. There were drives and times when I tipped my cap and thought he was finally getting in synch with his players.
But, he makes tons of money (relative to most Americans) and thems the breaks. He will only have the stink of one bad season on him and there's still time to chalk this one up per public perception, as a mulligan. I wish him well.
Now, it's time for all concerned parties to part ways amicably, and head for greener pastures. I hope Josh lands the Iowa gig and rehabilitates their O. If he does, this season will definitely be viewed as a mulligan and his branding will mostly be fine.
For us? Let's get back to the original word I honed in on -
Accountability. If MC truly wants to become an elite coach, and I believe he does, he really needs to hire someone to run an exciting brand of football that showcases the run, while still taking the top of the D and regularly tosses it to the TE.
This was Josh's mulligan year. This needs to be Mario's mulligan year as well. If Mario sticks with true accountability and listens to Alonzo, he will absolutely succeed here.
