No way that Mario brings back THE guy that destroyed UM's offense, caused the entire QB room to regress, and resulted in Mario being named the worst HC hire in the NCAA for the 2022 season .... dead last with a D- rating. No ... Gattis is gone period.
Ponce caused the QBs to regress. He is the QB coach. Him and Gattis need to go.

Tomorrow seems like a good day for a news dump during nfl when everyone is distracted

You could say the same about the offense. Both sides of the ball seriously lack talent, but the coordinators have to be held responsible. The defense was bad so Steele has to be held accountable.
I mean yea we could have hired the Utah DC for this past year and the defense wouldn't have been good, but I think of it this way the guys that do have talent on the defense got better this year

Gattis still collecting a paycheck. Amazing.
He has a 2 year contract. So he'll be collecting paychecks for awhile.

Which exactly why Mario is being prudent.

The best possible thing for Miami is for Gattis to get the best, highest, paying job he can get. If everybody knows he's about to get fired, he has zero leverage to negotiate with a potential employer.

Mario's job is to do what's best for the University of Miami...

his job is to do what's best for the football program not the schools financials. if they couldn't afford a 1.8 mill buyout then dont pay the man that much.

And firing a coach instead of spending a few weeks to help him get a next best job is not what's best for the football program (long term) or the university.

Mario will have to hire several coordinators during his career here. He's more likely to get better interested candidates if they know that if they fail, he'll help them land on their feet and it's not just an abrupt end or a major nosedive to their career.

Mario is already fighting against several reputations of "ruining quarterbacks, boring offenses, bad for wide receivers." Don't think he wants to add "ruins Broyles award winners" to his resume.

stoops had no issue firing an OC immediately after the first season. im not saying gattis won't be fired and if the replacement is lined up, it doesn't matter when. im just saying the excuses made is ridiculous. a lot of this is Marios own doing. he hired a ****** OC from Michigan without even bothering to realize Michigan put training wheels on him after riding solo to two **** years. gattis rep beyond Mario is bad. no one likes him. every place hes been has talked poorly about him.

And yet he still kept getting promoted, including getting a job here.

Franklin (who he worked with for 6 years) helped him get a job at Bama.
Saban helped him get a job at Michigan (where he worked with Harbaugh for 3 years).
Michigan (not sure if Harbaugh) helped him get a job here.

Just saying if he was so despised, nobody has fired him yet and every job he's gotten has been a promotion.

Every head coach before Mario, 3 very respected head coaches, didn't fire Gattis and helped him get a better job.

Harbaugh hired a Co-OC and a new QBC to take over the offense after gattis stunk for 2 seasons as the sole OC. gatis got lucky Mario came calling and then gattis trashed Michigan on the way out. saban only had gattis on staff for 1 year. locksley (his boss at Bama) had a falling out. gattis trashed Michigan on the way out. gattis then also got into it with fans on twitter. on top of that, insiders here have said the staff dont like gattis let alone the kids

If Mario doesn't see Gattis as the main problem with our atrocious offense this season, who does he blame? And, if he does nothing, why should he or us fans expect much of a different outcome in 2023?

So Harbaugh didn't fire him and instead worked with him? He also won the Broyles award even though his head coach hated him? You realize they have to be nominated by the head coach right? So Harbaugh, who hated Gattis, not only kept him on staff for 3 years and got him help, but also nominated him for the most prestigious award in college football for an assistant coach?

I agree Mario needs to move on from Gattis and 100% think it happens. I'm just trying to give some perspective on why it hasn't PUBLICLY happened yet.

if Harbaugh had faith in him, why did he strip him of his duties? getting a sole OC a co-OC and more help isnt what you think it is. it means you stunk at your job and he also allegedly lost play calling duties there. gattis followed that help up w trashing Michigan on the way out. he lied about play calling at Bama too. Michigan fans will tell you gattis wasn't good and it was more Weiss and Moore than gattis for their offensive turnaround. guess who are the OCs this year

I never said Harbaugh had faith in him. I have no idea how Harbaugh felt about Gattis. But if he hated/didn't have faith in him, he never publicly showed that..quite the opposite. Not only did he not fire him, but he nominated him for the Broyles award.

Just saying Mario could be following a similar path. He doesn't like him and wants to get rid of him, but is trying to find the best path forward for all parties.

I'm not sure. I'm just speculating with some thoughts on why he hasn't been publicly fired yet.

“Accountability“, one of Mario’s core pillars…

Prob nominated him hoping some Neaderthal would take him off his hands and wouldn’t have to fire him. Lucky for Harbaugh, Miami was that program.

That should be one of the biggest drivers in firing Gattis. I don't think this year's O abomination lands 100% on Gattis's shoulders.

He did a solid job at Michigan and won the Broyles. He didn't suddenly forget how to coach. However, he didn't seem to have a good feel for playcalling, at least with our current roster and at the end of the day, Mario has a decade's long contract and Gattis doesn't.

There needs to be a blood sacrifice, so the local townships (ie. players and coaches) understand that underperformance will not be tolerated in the new regime.

As a man, husband and father, I do feel for him. When he accepted the job, I'm sure he had no idea (nor did anyone) the internal corruption+the injuries we would get smacked with this year. If our OL was in better shape and our starting QB had not gotten injured half way through, would he have fared better? Of course. There were drives and times when I tipped my cap and thought he was finally getting in synch with his players.

But, he makes tons of money (relative to most Americans) and thems the breaks. He will only have the stink of one bad season on him and there's still time to chalk this one up per public perception, as a mulligan. I wish him well.

Now, it's time for all concerned parties to part ways amicably, and head for greener pastures. I hope Josh lands the Iowa gig and rehabilitates their O. If he does, this season will definitely be viewed as a mulligan and his branding will mostly be fine.

For us? Let's get back to the original word I honed in on - Accountability. If MC truly wants to become an elite coach, and I believe he does, he really needs to hire someone to run an exciting brand of football that showcases the run, while still taking the top of the D and regularly tosses it to the TE.

This was Josh's mulligan year. This needs to be Mario's mulligan year as well. If Mario sticks with true accountability and listens to Alonzo, he will absolutely succeed here.
