I think Mario's interview style is good for identifyihg "teaching ability" in coaches, and it might be somewhat good for figuring out if a guy has the "academic" ability to call plays, but I don't think it addresses coaching-staff-chemistry and I don't think it properly shows whether a guy has the FEEL to call plays in the heat of a game.

I know I keep going back to this example, but it's because some dopes on the board like to harp on "experience". Take Ken Dorsey. He's doing pretty well right now, so I'd simply argue that if a guy has the FEEL for calling plays, that should trump "experience" calling plays.

Gattis may have had all the right answers IN INTERVIEW, but he has clearly failed under the pressure of real-life game situations, with a ticking clock.

I agree with you.

I have also been reminding folks that Gattis was not one of Mario’s initial targets for OC, so you’ve gotta use context

What is crazy is that he had already failed in 2020 at Michigan and Harbaugh had to appoint a Co OC (TE coach) to actually do game planning and there was a second staffer who was also moved into an offensive play related role so they could assist Gattis. He had demonstrated that he couldn't do the job and we still hired him.

Yeah… and when it’s announced that he’s fired it won’t say fired, it’ll say “mutually parted ways” and we’ll owe him money and then he’ll be announced somewhere else shortly after.

That plays out literally every offseason lol

Yes, and Miami will pay him 1.8 million LESS the offset of whatever his new salary is (presuming it is lower).

And if he gets a job that pays more than 1.8 million, Miami owes nothing.

Not disagreeing with you. That was my primary concern when we hired him. I realize that sometimes there are differences of opinion/style, which necessitate that someone moves on, but I want more answers when it also involves a drop and/or rise in production that may or may not be related to that particular coach.

I still think he had qualifications. But I would have kicked the tires HARD on what happened over the past couple of years.

Again, this goes back to what I've said before on coaching staff chemistry. Maybe Gattis was a great position coach teacher. Maybe Gattis was a great recruiter. But if he is a coach that doesn't play well with others...you might have to step back and re-evaluate the job offer.

My guess is this has nothing to do with a buyout and more to do with getting all the pieces in place before announcing anything.

Scenario Mario Wants To Avoid
Fire Gattis before ESD while not having another OC in place. Additionally, there's question marks about Frank Ponce, Kevin Smith, and maybe even Field.

Recruits/Transfers are not surprised (and some potentially relieved) but now they keep asking about who is taking over. Mario has 2-3 options he's seriously considering but the decision maybe drags on a bit. Could be that the #1 option has a few other offers on the table or is waiting for an HC opportunity.

Now recruits (and transfers) are second guessing things a bit because other programs are hitting them up and negatively recruiting us.

Scenario Mario Wants To Implement
Fire Gattis before ESD and have the new OC ready to announce at the same time. This may also result in the announcing of other coaches returning (Smith, Mirabal) and/or other coaches that have also been relieved of their duties (Ponce).

Recruits/Transfers are not surprised by the firing of Gattis and get excited (hopefully) about the new OC coming in. There's probably some other shuffling that happens, for example, new OC is also QB coach so Ponce ends up moving on + we hire a new WR coach to join the new OC.

Now recruits (and transfers) are pumped by the new hire and other programs can't swoop in late to snatch some of these guys.

.......at least that's what I hope is happening behind the scenes.
