Josh Gattis (before its deleted)

In hindsight, it seems that Gattis inherited a fairly well-oiled machine at Michigan and even with what seems like a basic, conservative playbook, had enough talent and other coaching resources/support staff at Michigan to succeed.

Here, left to his own devices, he just totally flunked.

He's kind of like the Miami bro born with a silver spoon because mami and papi have a nice company who thinks he's big sh*t because he has a big salary and a nice title and then decides to become an entrepreneur and fails (only to run back to mami and papi).
This analogy right here. Great post

Correct on all counts sir! I just want to know how this rube managed to win the Broyles Award.

Same way Shannon did in 2001; he out-talented the competition, Michigan had a big season and the Wolverines finally crushed Ohio State in a big game—so he became “that guy” that was rallied around as a top assistant last year.

Fell to eventual national champion Georgia in the playoffs and went 12-2, which helped the narrative after a 2-4 run during COVID.

What I don’t understand is why it took Mario so long to hire a coordinator and this is the guy he picked.

I was like, “maybe he’s being super diligent and doing a ton of research” but he would have seen this coming if he was doing his research. You’ve got a blank check and you take six months to hire a guy who not only has three years experience but two of them were flops.

I owned a repair shop. If I was hiring a technician, i certainly wouldn’t hire the guy who was terrible for two years and only started producing when his previous boss assigned someone to hold his hand all day at work.

Maybe it’s because Gattis worked at Alabama with Mario and they were friends. Like he’s friends with Ponce (terrible quarterback play) and Mirabal (terrible offensive line play). Are we seeing the pattern?
it suggests he went whale hunting, failed and opted for the best available alternative (according to him). it was a failure and he needs to cure the mistake immediately.

Again, Im going to try to address the Ponce aspect of this topic.

What evidence can you provide that Ponce is part of the problem? And please give us more than "TVD regressed" type stuff. If Ponce's efforts were being blocked by Gattis (which has been reported by more than one UM outlet), what evidence do you have to justify your statement above?
I agree with you. But can we agree that while there's reason to believe that he wasn't the problem, simple logic would also suggest that he wasn't the solution either? I say this because if he were, wouldn't Mario have just given him playcalling duties and promoted him to Co-OC?

So, while I have no issue with Ponce, if he were promoted as the new playcaller/OC/CO-OC whatever they dress it up as, imo Mario will have failed miserably again. Ponce would be starting out with a lot of negative equity to make up due to misconceptions about his role in the UM offensive attack and also about his abilities as a playcaller for a program with championship level resources and aspirations.

So again, I have no issue with Ponce this season. Imo the QB coach and OC need to be handled by the same coach and I think that places Ponce in a very unfortunate situation given the pressure that will be on Mario to nail this next OC hire. I can't see a situation where Ponce remains unless he takes a demotion, which isn't fair either, but what in life is you know.

But ... in the case of Gattis ... who played safety in high school and college ... WHAT does he know about coaching QB's? Nothing. What does he really know about running an offense?
We're speaking the same language. He absolutely could not be the QB coach.

Yeah I think we're in general agreement on this subtopic.

Mario missed on his first couple OC candidates. After that I think he wanted to show some positive movement to the marketplace in an effort to shore up the 2021 recruiting class so he hired Ponce and other offensive assistants before Gattis. Tough situation all around.

I expected to see Mario on the sideline against Pitt on his cell phone telling Gattis mom to come pick her son up.

It was reported by a couple of sites ... something like "Gattis and Ponce give the QB's different instructions ... have different ideas on how they should be working". Also been reported that Gattis has alienated the position coaches ... that would include Ponce. They aren't "working together" and the result seems that "they aren't working" period as Gattis cancels them out. Seems like Gattis is THE cancer in the offensive unit with the result that the offense is totally dysfunctional.
have said all year, CMC needs to hire the new O/C and let him bring a few of his own assistants same on the DC side
CMC get out of the way..... recruit, build culture.... but stay out of the way

Mario's a wierdo.

Gattis had zero to do with Michigan's success. He didn't recruit or develop their offensive line which was the best in the country the past two years and Harbaugh told Gattis the type of plays they were going to run. Gattis had to review his game plan with Harbaugh before every game....and in many cases it became Harbaugh's game plan. Most Michigan fans were relieved when he left Ann Arbor.
