Joe Yearby

Let me first say that I really like JY..with that said, why are some so quick to dismiss Gus, he is 235lbs and looks to be improving, we need a big back to compliment Duke. I get the JY hype but this is how some fans set themselves up for failure.

Pretty much how I feel. I LOVE Yearby but physically he is behind and Gus looks like he will get a lot of reps this year. Yearby will be a stud I have no doubts, just not sure how much action he sees.

He will get on the field but I don't see how he can possibly match what Duke did his first year.

We'll see. I like Gus, but Gus is still running like he's 195 rather than 225. Joseph Yearby's numbers in Dade are ridiculous - second all time if I'm not mistaken. I really think he'll be hard to keep off the field. I think some fans don't give him the love he deserves because he's not a track guy, but he's a **** of a football player. Only thing that I see slowing him down is possibly his injury.

I dont think having two good backs, one pounder and a scat back behind Duke is a bad thing. We def. got some talent back there. I also like #44 with his speed.

I just hate how we go about crowning someone (talented as he may be) who has yet to touch the field.

At the end I hope each of them (Gus and JY) have 500-800yds each and Duke breaks 1500+. Duke has been on pace each of the previous two years to break 1k but was slowed down each year by injury. I am really hoping with a good stable behind him he can last the entire season.

1,000 all purpose yards with 8 td's

At the risk of derailing scintillating threads about the WEZ and the Dancin' Kingsburys...

What are your expectations for Joe Yearby this year? (Assuming a full recovery from injury.) Immediate 2nd team RB? All-purpose back? Return game? 2 Heismans and a reach-around from Bear Bryant's corpse?

Whaddya think?

He's a disgusting running back. Just insane natural ability. But Duke is going to be a machine this year and Gus, well like you said.....we will see
Honestly its more a physical thing for Yearby. He was already a smallish back but then having to sit with the injury sets him back further. Though I should qualify I have no idea wuat his training regiment or capabilities were when he was hurt. I could be making bad assumptions. Would I be surprised if he balled out and ran for 1,000 yards? Nope. But I think the deck is stacked against it a little bit.

Probably exactly the way he likes it.

Personally I don't think Yearby is a scat back at all. Maybe I am splitting hairs but he runs like a grown *** man in between the tackles, just like Duke.

I like Yearby but he has a few things working against his favor.
1. He missed spring practice where he could have gained some ground on Gus.
2. He's still unproven at the college level. Can he get 3-5 yards a pop on defenses that are bringing 8-9 in the box like Gus was doing vs PITT?
3. He's light.. Golden didn't want to get Duke's weight up for nothing. Golden wants his RBs to have some mass on them which both Duke and Gus have. Yearby is at best 185 right now.
4. Depth is not a dire concern like it was when Duke arrived as a True Freshman. Golden wouldn't have moved Dallas to Safety if he wasn't high on Gus and the other rbs behind him. Moving DC to safety was as much a vote of confidence in Gus as it was for DC.

Only way I see Yearby getting burn is if injuries force him into action. Or if Gus gets a bad case of fumbleitis.

LIke I said, Gus is proven. What he did vs Pitt as impressive. Carlos Hyde like. I can only expect him to have improved with the year of experience plus getting the bulk of the work load in spring. at 6'2 235 he's a physical freak. You can't coach that.

how would u compare both their TEAMS tho? dont follow highschool football all that much, but i do know yearby had cook with him in the backfield. Was duke the only threat on that norland team, that you were able to keep him in check? besides the two headed monster at rb dont central also have devante phillips? wouldnt it make more sense you can stop a guy, when hes basically the team, and you can focus all your efforts on him, while as central had atleast 3 players that could really hurt you?
agreeed when you say you cant compare the two, but just curious.

I posted later about that:

"I agree. Joe needs the ball. I think he was unfairly overshadowed by Cook -- and that was 100% a product of recruiting service hype. We were glad to see Cook in the game. We were actually more concerned with the 3rd string guy (the little dead head kid) than Cook. Joe's feet are outstanding. It's almost looks fake in person. You're constantly in disbelief when watching him.

That being said. I was more impressed by Duke when he was at Norland. His offense wasn't as good though. Their blocking schemes were a joke. He created everything himself."

But to elaborate a bit, Central was very solid team schematically. They were really good at two plays. Thats says a lot. The coaching down here is really bad, to be frank. Central had their inside zone blocking schemes down. We were impressed. They were also able to play action that play with the bubble screen. They blocked great on the perimeter as well. Their other stuff sucked.

Norland just had Duke and Brandon Snell. Snell didn't hurt us because we had decent corners that year, and we had them bailing all game. Their blocking schemes were off. Like, always. We were able to fit right all the time. Only when we made a mental error, Duke would exploit us. The second game we played he had 80something yards rushing and he got 60ish of it on one carry. I don't want to bad mouth Coach Heidelberg or anything. He does a great job of keeping his kids on course. They were respectful and they played really hard.
The best feet in his class. "period" NOT Florida, but nationally. Not RB, but all positions. The best, most quick and agile feet. It is fair to say that he has better feet on the Miami Hurricanes than anyone including Duke and Deon. if he finds his way to 200 pounds in a few years without losing quickness, Lord have mercy.

I think Lache Seastrunk had the best feet for a RB in 2010 as a high schooler. Watch and tell me who is better between the two today. Obviously he's gained mass, but it's not close anymore imho. Yearby's feet should be in every conversation about ceiling.

Yearby is this years Thomas without the drama and build up. If your not excited to have him in our backfield… He is not as big as cook or sony, but he is quicker and more dynamic in open space and between the tackles. Cook needed a hole, Yearby needs a crack.

Which is why I think he's #3 on the depth chart.

Nah. I think boar is spot on. I couldn't agree more. Great, great post. He had examples and facts to support his argument.

JY will be the man next year and gus will be 2nd. yearby will get a lot of carries and will end the year with more carries and yards than gus. i don't like making absolutes, but, i'm pretty sure yearby is going to get more time than gus, especially by the middle of the season. unless gus turns a corner and shows more than a short yardage back.

JY has the best feet in the nation and its not even close. This kid is has unreal feet, vision, and natural RB ability. He will be one of the greatest RB's to ever play for The U!!

I say the more the merrier. We need three top line backs at any one time. I like the breakdown of two shifty type guys and one bigger back. If steps up it will be a good problem to have. Let's hope the days of having one good back are behind us

I'm really interested in seeing this kid play... He doesn't have breakaway speed but he is extremely quick has good vision... I want to see how he does this year... He's also small but I'm excited to see how he performs...

My comment about him not getting love wasn't directed at you. And I agree, he's definitely not a scat back. He consistently finds seams and moves the chains. I just think there is a tendency on this board to under value players that don't play cinderella and/or don't have olympic sprinter's speed. If you think about the backs that have come out of Dade, even recently, to be number two all time says you're a **** of a football player. There will be many Canes who will be pleasantly surprised at how good Joe turns out to be.

redshirting a talented RB like Yearby is pretty much retarded these days (assuming he's healthy)

not to mention that our depth chart at RB pretty much forces him into early action
