Florida kids - at least those of us in Miami - watched the Gordon Solie and Jim Ross WCW precursors like Championship Wrestling from Florida on Saturday mornings then I think it was the National Wrestling Alliance??? Rhodes, Flair, the Windhams - ****, I’ll go back to Pak Song to Mike and Eddie Graham and Jack and Jerry Briscoe through Nikolai Volkoff on that production.

In the 80’s I got to college in DC and my Brooklyn, NY roommate was into WWF - Superfly Snuka and that group. I didn’t really know that much about it. I had seen the names in magazines but I don’t remember wing exposed to it on tv before that.
Kevin Sullivan and the Family. Black Jack Mulligan, Dusty, Barry, Chief Wahoo McDaniel, Abdullah the Butcher, Bruiser Brody, The Junkyard Dog, Tony Atlas, Superstar Billy Graham, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, and a bunch of other great wrestlers. Those were the days.

Now wrestling sucks. 99% of the current crop of wrestlers have no personality, and try too hard. Once the Undertaker, Kane, The Rock and some other dudes called it quits, it went downhill fast.

Nah Miami's defensive philosophy was of boom or bust variety. It's why you get high TFLs and Sack numbers but get gutted by the UNCs of the world.

Oregon had space eaters freeing up edge guys and linebackers so the dline numbers aren't flashy
This!!! Our D line made more splash plays because our scheme was to create havoc. To get up field as quick as possible and cause chaos. Feast or famine, which in 2020-21 was a lot of famine. Our scheme is why there were always running lanes available against our front. Discipline be damned.

Put this guy's resume against the Larry Johnsons of the world. The Garners. The Roaches. The Bates'. The Haggins. The Robinsons. The Rockers. The Partridges.

****, put it against the Strouds or Kuls even.

Detach your emotion from the situation for a moment and just look at the resume. It is second tier.

If you're telling me we are paying top dollar, this is not the name we should be settling on.

guys have to want to come here ... if we can recruit the way i think we can, he'll end up being a better coach based on talent alone

@Paranos @Coach Macho @gogeta4 @DMoney - do you guys agree with this relative to who QP named as better? 2nd tier?

I mean Larry Johnson - whatever - he’s the platinum standard I assume - but the rest?

At least a couple of those names have benefited greatly from where they are.

You'd take Stroud or Kul over Salave’a right now?

If a guy who produced multiple all conference Power 5 players and is relatively young is a disappointment for a school that gave Mario 8 mill a year, then where are we at with expectations?

First of all...
How do you know this for sure?

Have you ever watched these guys coach personally? Ever sat in one of their clinics?

At the end of the day, it's a fvckin' Defensive Line coach for God's sake. DL coach is not going to make or break this program. It's Mario's guy. HC's like to bring on their guys. We don't know what additional value this guy brings. Only Mario knows that.

Number one rule hiring an assistant: He needs to match with the coach, so that the coach can let him do his thing.

Number two rule: He needs to match with the DC and they need to be on the same page developing kids, playing fundamentally sound and scheme-wise.

Salavea cares about fundamentals. Dude played eight years in the league at the position he coaches now. He knows what you need as a defensive tackle.

Never said the DL coach would make or break the program, just that there's better out there than him. Recruitung wise, his history isn't elite on the D line either.

Just going off the resume and what I've seen from their DL back when Slick Willie brought him, his product is very sub par and unimpressive.

If Mario is bringing him in for other things (very likely he carries the AHC tag), cool. Im speaking strictly to his record as a position coach. He's never produced a dominant defensive line.

You're my guy tho, so what do you think (outside of the hire) ? In general, what is the metric for judging a DLine coach in your opinion ?
