Jim Brown rips 'reprehensible' NCAA

I haven't been keeping track of this topic, but is it just football players that are wanting paid? Our is it as far down as the guy on the swim team, thinking he needs paid too?

I guess none of these Fuchers realize these kids are getting a free education and meals, plus a monetary stipend each money. There are millions of students that would like to have the same privilege as a college football player.

These players generate millions of dollars every year.

The only students that can even complain are the ones helping the university do research that will generate millions of dollars.

The average Joe Schmucky student can't complain about schit. They don't generate on a per capita basis like the football players do.

Okay then, they don't need a university. They can form their own feeder football league, pay for the league's organizational and administrative costs, collect a paycheck and pay taxes. If the stadium is on campus they can pay to rent the football facilities, or they can pay rent for or build them off campus. Think of what a deal this would be for the majority of players who never make it into the NFL! No more victimization by the colleges, they can only be oppressed as a result of their own choices.

That sounds like a blissful arrangement you have put together in your fantasy land. What happens to these universities when they can't afford to offer certain degrees because they can't afford the tenured professors salary that the football team was paying for?

In the real world. There is this little organization called the NCAA. You may have heard of them. They have effectively prevented the type of minor league football program that you yourself have just suggested.

The only organization that could make that happen is the NFL it's self but why should they when they can just use the NCAA as it is now as a free developmental league?

You telling kids to start their own league is cute. Bless your heart.

What's cute is thinking that universities didn't exist before football. If professors are really THAT good what will prevent them from finding teaching positions or actual work in their field? How is it that the minor league economic model works for the players but not the profs? If a university needs the football income to support professors how will they also be able to pay all other athletes, offer academic scholarships or not raise tuition? Are you making a case for both the universities and the minor league?

Please describe how the NCAA has "effectively prevented" players or the NFL from starting up a minor league system? Does the NFL fear the NCAA? What fantasy is is denying the economics of a football minor league system, some of which has been mentioned and you are ignoring? In your "real world" if a player is offered a choice between a football scholarship to a major D-1 university in a system, whatever its faults, that is a proven on ramp to the NFL or instead a job at a salary to be negotiated for a time to be negotiated (with a lawyer if they're smart) the kid will jump on the offer to play minor league?

In this world does everyone go minor league, are there any players who in the knowledge of the odds to make it in the NFL would opt for the education? Are there any players who dream of playing in the league, but also plan on a career after that short career span?

We can agree that it is "cute" to suggest the kids start their own league, obviously adults will start it and run it. We may disagree on the question of to whose benefit.

I did enjoy the condescending tone of your post. ;)

Take away that football money and watch how fast universities go back to being something only the super rich can afford.

Takes a special kind of kid to think like you do on this one.

I have to disagree a bit here. There are many universities that operate just fine without a high profile football program, or any football program at all. The colleges that are expensive, will remain expensive regardless of a football program. Miami for example will still be expensive if they dropped the football program.

Tell that to the state schools with huge stadium revenue that depend on that money. Sure some colleges will still be around. Many degrees and programs will vanish.

Glad to see that you don't take issue with any of my points. What puzzles me is that you continue with unsupported assertions? Should I guess that the degrees and programs that will vanish are football, sports administration and what else? Without the big football revenues please list which colleges you think will disappear and which will continue? I may be in favor of seeing some of them disappear. :foodnd:

If there is a minor league would not the state schools still collect their huge stadium revenues from the leagues? If no does that mean that places like Tallahassee, Gainesville disappear from the football map? Will we be left with only major city minor leagues? Will that shrink the number of teams and if so how will that help the players?

If we agree that adults will organize and operate the minor leagues sponsored by the NFL (to use the baseball model) and you were an investor would you want the questions I've asked here ignored?

Let me make this easier for you. College football brings in huge revenues, it transforms the economy of many backwater towns, it provides an education for many who would not otherwise be able to afford it (see Sunny Odogwu). It can be life transformative for some players that didn't know they had hidden talents other than athletics. The scholarship benefits a high school athlete receives when compared to what the university takes in may not seem to be enough to many (especially when they ignore the school's total investment like the stadium that took 50 years to become what it is today, and the fancy new football facilities, etc.), but for those who have to borrow to pay for those benefits (or parent who write the checks) it can take longer to pay off their student loans than the average NFL career is long, a scholarship is extremely valuable.

Do I think a stipend for athletes is appropriate? If I had a say it would be yes. It could be worthwhile to put some entertainment money in the hands of kids from families that cannot afford it. And as their "parents" the coaches should be able to take it away as necessary (see Jameis Winston and shoplifting).

Yet, as we all know from tales from the NFL that too much money too soon can be problematic for some. And we all know that the majority of college players, even some Heisman trophy winners, will not progress far beyond college. The more industrious one's will have achieved their degree and found gainful employment, some others will end up a 30 year-old has-been.

It's been fun discussing how other people should spend their money!

Got to go now and finish mowing the lawn, couldn't get it done this morning because there was a fuel flow problem to be resolved, it would run and then stop, and when I fixed that the carb sediment bowl fell off and it took some time to find a tool that fit the bolt that fell into the grass. I had to pull it off another parts mower. Compared to Sunny Odogwu I am blessedly rich!

Football revenue carries the average athletic dept. That's about it. The real loss of revenue would be to local vendors and businesses on game day.

This is one of the most moronic and stupid things I have ever been witness to on the internet. And I was with Al Gore when he discovered the internet. I would call you an idiot or a ******, maybe even a ******* dumb fvck but I might get in trouble if I did.

Just last season's football only numbers for the ******* morons out there that just don't get it.

Texas: $139 mil
ND: $117 mil
Bama: $110 mil
LSU: $105 mil
Michigan:$104 mil
Florida: $94
Oklahoma: $92

Only for the schitty schools. The schools with huge football programs would be decimated.

Interesting. So what's their football budget, total athletic budget, and what portion of the school's total revenues come from football? Just want to put it into perspective.

Players are not allowed to make money off their on likeness or selling their own Jersey. Heck they can't even make money off public appearances or endorsements. The NCAA made billions off these athletes. They should be able to at least make money off of their likeness and name.
