I've been following recruiting fairly seriously for about 17 years. Over that time, I can't count the number of times I've heard of a prospect, and then gone and seen them live (or on TV) and they just didn't make many plays. I've seen a ton of specimens that look huge, can run like a deer, but come game time they're quiet other than 2 or 3 amazing plays. Some of those guys pan out, some don't. What I love is hearing about a kid and then watching a game and seeing him MAKE FOOTBALL PLAYS consistently throughout the game. When I watched Miramar earlier this year on TV, Grace was that guy. He was in on or around the play almost every down. I feel a lot more comfortable taking kids like that who are natural football players. You can tell when kids have a knack for making plays... when you combine that with good physical specs, you get a prospect that gets the Swag gold seal of approval.
this is EXACTLY who i am...and always been even in my high school days when we would scout the teams we were about to play.
Examples:
I played my hs ball in Hollywood..Chaminade was sort of like our little bro(think fiu) and played their games at our stadium. i knew all the guys on the team grew up/boys with Jon Beason...then heard Glen Cook had a um offer....anyone who watched a chaminade game at the time knew that Beason on off and defense was just someone that jumped off..and u wouldnt even knew cook was on the field most of the time.
* You heard about the Davin Josephs..and then went to see Hallandale play and see a big guy just mauling people.
Those werejust football players...who did their thing on the field and made plays...not camp/workout warriors. Think we got away from it a little bit and get caught up in the camp/prototype size thing.
Jermaine Grace to me is a sure fire prospect. When u see Miramar play you see this kid constantly and that was even last year. Kid gained some weight since last year so he is showing their is growth potential. He is a shoe in imo....
