Great post, usually agree with most of what you say. The thing that’s never talked about enough when it comes to separation among elites is efficiency.Or when UGA’s vaunted defense almost lost giving up 41 to Ohio St in the semis/Michigan’s vaunted defense gave up 51 to TCU…
Or when Alabama had to hang 52 to beat UF in the SEC Champ game in 2020 to make the playoff, then hung 52 on Ohio St in the Champ game
Or when UGA lost to Bama in the SEC Champ game by giving up 41 and then scored 33+ in both their playoff games to win the ‘Ship
Or when LSU hung 63 in the semis in 2019 and then 42 on Brett Venebles to win the ‘ship
Or when Clemson hung 44 with T-Law on Bama in 2018
It’s been a new era since 2017, there’s a reason teams like Washington and Oregon and Missouri and Ole Miss and FSU and Oklahoma flirted with the Top 10 all year long.
defense. does. Not. win. championships. anymore. lol. don’t let the old timers tell you different tho, we’re still living in the 90’s.
When it comes to elite teams yearly (talking top 5-8) the difference really is efficiency from the 20 in. Doesn’t matter if your defense gives up 500 yards, if they hold the opponent to 3 points 2/3 times in the RZ that’s usually the difference.
