No. 49 Jarez Parks breaks down his recruitment - On The Trail- ESPN

SEBASTIAN RIVER, Fla. -- When talking about the top edge rushing prospects in the Class of 2017, it doesn’t take long to bring Jarez Parks into the conversation.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound two-sport star continues to be one of the most heavily recruited prospects in the class with offers from the majority of top programs in college football.

“I’m taking [the recruiting process] very lightly, and not letting it get to me,” said Parks, ranked No. 49 in the ESPN Junior 300. “I’m focusing on track right now, but in the summer I will try to narrow down my list.”

Away from track, he is staying in contact with a few colleges, including increased contact with Alabama.

As Alabama climbs Parks’ list, now likely ahead of Florida, Nick Saban’s message to Parks is a consistent.

“We really want you at Alabama -- word for word,” said Parks, of Saban’s pitch. “You will be a great asset to this team. Mostly, he just tells I would fit in perfectly. They want me to play outside linebacker, but I can also play with my hand in the dirt.”

Playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme is very appealing to Parks. With that said, the interest in Florida has been buoyed by a relationship with head coach Jim McElwain.

“The big message that Coach McElwain says at the end of our conversations is, ‘You are going to be a Gator.’ And that I would be mostly a defensive end, but also play in coverage if they needed me to.”

With summer trips being scheduled to USC, UCLA, Georgia, Clemson, South Carolina and possibly others, there are some key factors Parks is looking at when considering the next four years.

“One of the main things is the medical program because I’m looking to major in pre-med. Other than that, just the way I fit in with the players and everything and if the program flows like a machine. If I can really see myself going there and being a part of a team, or if I could just see myself going there as a regular student -- that’s what I’m really looking for.”

Why is UM not even in the picture for this kid?

Obviously swayed by Alabama's medical school.

Obviously swayed by Alabama's medical school - which don't believe even exists. As stated earlier, med school in Alabama is UAB.

Which is ranked head and shoulders above ours. We rank higher as an overall university than as a medical school.

We could really use his talent.

But I fully expect him to fall drastically down in ranking (#200-300 type)

Showed up at a camp WAY shorter and lighter than he claimed. Kaindoh isn't from Florida but putting them side by side and it really shows you who is elite. Still a blue chipper though.

Pre Med is not gonna happen if he dedicates himself to football. A few of my friends from the UM class of 2015 are now in med school and they worked 24/7 on school. Traveling for games, practices, workouts, meetings, and a strict meal schedule is not conducive with going to med school. I wish these students were educated better. Not saying it's impossible, but it is highly, highly unlikely to go as planned.

Kids like saying impressive impressive majors. You put him or anyone for that matter in a chemistry, biology and health sciences classes, then ask them to meet the study and college football requirements, forget it. Even Brainiacs struggle to meet the pre-med requirements at a level good enough to get into med school. He like the 99% will make a football decision to attend his favorite choice or one that he feels gives him the best chance to win a NC.

Sebastian River High School?s Jarez Parks balancing life as an elite recruit

Sebastian River High School’s Jarez Parks balancing life as an elite recruit

Maybe a few more.

That's how many unread text messages Sebastian River High School rising senior Jarez Parks had from college football coaches on his phone early last week.

The 6-foot-5, 262-pound defensive end/outside linebacker, rated No. 1 on the TCPalm Super 11, is the desire of every major football program east of the Mississippi River — and plenty west, too.

It's been that way for more than a year, which is why Parks finds himself stuck.

Stuck sounds like a ridiculous word considering the amount of high school athletes who would go to extremes to have just one college coach recruiting them. But Parks' reality is he's 1 percent athlete. And the other 99 percent can't comprehend what that life is like.

Yes, Parks gets to Skype with Alabama head coach Nick Saban and had a dozen college coaches watch him for an entire practice earlier this month. And there's a part of him fully aware of how enormous that is.

But he also would like to have some down time — just a little bit of peace and quiet in the midst of the recruiting process. He wants to spend time with his family, doing something they want to do and talking about something other than the future or what colleges showed up at school that day.

It's the reason why so many elite student athletes end up using the word "relieved" rather than "excited" on National Signing Day.

Recruiting is a warped version of a dating show, but there are a lot of eager suitors and only so many hours in a day.

"(Coaches) come to school and visit me," Parks said. "I get to get pulled out of class. I'm blessed to have the opportunity with this. And I'm grateful. At the end of the day though, I still need a life to myself. I need to be true to myself. I reached out to a couple (coaches who texted), but I don't go back and forth every day. I can't do that.

"I went out to eat a couple days ago and a couple coaches called. I try to keep calling back. It's cool to have a coach take time out of his day to see how I'm doing, but I try to have a life. I'm grateful for it. I can't complain."

Sebastian River coach Kevin Pettis says Parks hasn't complained. He's polite, he listens to the recruiting pitches — even though he says they haven't changed much in the past year. But with so many vying for Parks' affection, Pettis says it's clear when his star athlete is interested.

"He does it in his actions," Pettis said. "I can tell when he gets excited about a team coming. He lights up and asks a lot of questions. I can tell when Jarez isn't interested. If he doesn't ask any questions (when sitting down with a coach), he's not interested. He'll just sit there and look at them, 'Yes sir. Yes, sir.' "

Pettis said many colleges essentially say the same things.

"Alabama and Clemson are a little different," Pettis said. "They have that NFL carrot to dangle. But Jarez knows the upper echelon of college football."

Parks still isn't entirely sure what he wants to do or where. The 2016 TCPalm All-Area Boys Athlete of the Year — he's also a two-time state discus champion athlete and received honorable mention on the all-area basketball team — says he would like to throw in college, but it wouldn't be a deal-breaker if he doesn't.

Pettis has talked about getting Parks to narrow his list to 10 or so, but Parks isn't ready yet. He's planning on visiting plenty of college campuses, just to get an idea of what life could be like for the next three to five years.

Pettis has a 14-school, five-day trip planned for Parks and some of Sebastian River's other top recruits this summer, covering colleges in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

It's not exactly the ideal summer — the last one Parks will have as a high school student — but it's the reality of being a 1 percent recruit.

"The only part of this that I'm still enjoying is realizing how blessed I am," he said. "A lot of guys would kill to be in the position I am right now. That's the only part that keeps me in a good attitude. I don't want to be negative."

Recruiting Jarez Parks? Mom has some questions

Recruiting Jarez Parks? Mom has some questions

Colleges have been recruiting Sebastian River High School defensive end Jarez Parks for more than a year.

They might want to start refining their recruiting pitch to Parks' mom, Ebony Williams, too.

Williams, a secretary at Sebastian River, gave Sharks coach Kevin Pettis a handwritten list of questions she has for each school recruiting her sons, Jarez and Wayne Parks. She delivered the list to Pettis in the school's weight room Monday morning.

"She asked me, 'Coach, can you come up with questions I should be asking?'" Pettis said. "I forgot, to be honest with you. She came up to me (Monday) and said, 'Here's the questions I need answered from these colleges.' I sent it to every single one of them and said, 'Hey, these are the questions mom has.'

"In 22 years, I've never had a mom do that. I'm glad she did it. It takes a lot off my plate."

Pettis had Williams scan the list and then emailed it to each coach and school that has offered Parks a scholarship.

Among the list of questions were:

What is the team/player graduation rate?
Is it a one- or a four-year scholarship?
What is the contract length for the head coach and the position coaches?
What medical expenses does the school cover?
How accommodating are faculty with student athletes missing classes?

"I told her some of it they're not going to know, but she's going to be one of the major players in the decision," Pettis said. "I think it's awesome, but I'm telling you, I've never had this happen."

Jarez Parks, a defensive end committed to play in the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, is rated No. 1 on the TCPalm Super 11. Wayne Parks, a defensive back, is rated No. 9.

Did you happen to read the article? While it's not everything, this might be a place to start when trying to figure out why he didn't mention us.

A women friend of mine (up here in Indian River County) who is close to Park family and talks with Jarez quite regularly, believes he his 100% committed to the Gaytors. Still we can try. Coach Klug was up here last week recruiting but who I don't know.

Does not seem like the kid is coming. I would not want our coaches to stop recruiting but I would not hold a ship for him on signing day if he still has the same stance in January.
