James Franklin

Being stuck here in the heart of nittany lion country I get hammered with Penn State crap constantly.
Saw an interesting interview couple weeks ago on TV with James Franklin regarding recruiting. He says his staff intentionally try to recruit two-sport athletes. Specifically they want football players with wrestling backgrounds. He says wrestlers come in with a mental toughness and a work ethic that a lot of other athletes don't have.
I found this interesting with all the talk earlier in the season about canes players not working hard in practices or not being mentally prepared for games. I'm certainly not saying give up on the high end south florida talent, but Diaz might want to think about this approach, especially with the trench players.

Thoughts?

The wrestling background has been a way of recruiting since I started following in ‘97

Not that he ever played but when we where on probation in 90’s Butch brought in OL Scott Puckett on wrestling scholarship. In fairness he was probably a better wrestler than football player

Iowa’s starting OL this year all placed in the top 3 at the state wrestling tournament or better when they were in high school. Wrestling requires balance and leverage to be successful. Wrestling and be a lineman in football have a lot of similar technique and there are a lot of football/wrestling coaches that try to get their linemen to go out for the other sport.

I would also say that there are few, if any high school, sports that require the mental toughness it takes to be a good wrestler.

Don't ya think it would be kinda hard for UM to bring in a kid on a wrestling scholie?
WTF?

Minnesota to pedo state, pre-game.

Wrestlers usually translate to Oline/Dline well because of hand usage and leverage.....and they do work HARD. Other positions depends because a lot of wrestlers i grew up with or knew in college were not great runners.

As for 2-sport athletes....i agree. Guys who play multiple sports are usually well rounded athletes and have more than just 1 skill and a better overall athletic profile because of the varying skillset needed for each sport. They're also not burned out on just that one sport. Far too often i see parents make kids play baseball year round, spring (typical), summer traveling team and then fall ball. Kids end up hating the sport.
Legend has it that Jimmy Johnson went to a Pennsauken HS basketball game. The Pennsauken team sent four Black guys and a white out to start the game. The white guy went over to jump center. When JJ saw that he knew the kid was an athlete.

His name? Greg Mark. Still number two to Danny Stubbs on UM season sack record with 15.5 sacks in 1989.ppp

Mike Irvin used to win dunking contests. Sometime basketball talent is a good indicator. Did you see the video of one of our freshman DTs from NYC doing dunks? Can't remember which one but it was impressive for a guy close to 300 lbs.

How many of the elite southern football schools have wrestling programs? Bama? LSU? Georgia? Maybe Ohio State does because wrestling seems to be bigger with the midwestern schools. I don't know about the southern schools. Of course you can recruit wrestlers to play just football even if you don't have a wrestling program.

The only school in the SEC that has it is Missouri I believe. There are several ACC schools that have it and almost all of the B10 have it.

Penn State is such an overrated team. The Big 10 in general is a total smoke and mirrors sh-t show with preseason fluffing in the polls. Ohio State is a great team, outside of OSU they’re not that great.

PSU has a wrestling program so it would make sense for them to recruit that route but we do not.

With a wrestler, you get someone with above-average endurance and strength and tackling form if they play D but while they are usually very quick in a short space you may not get the foot speed needed for football.
