Being stuck here in the heart of nittany lion country I get hammered with Penn State crap constantly.
Saw an interesting interview couple weeks ago on TV with James Franklin regarding recruiting. He says his staff intentionally try to recruit two-sport athletes. Specifically they want football players with wrestling backgrounds. He says wrestlers come in with a mental toughness and a work ethic that a lot of other athletes don't have.
I found this interesting with all the talk earlier in the season about canes players not working hard in practices or not being mentally prepared for games. I'm certainly not saying give up on the high end south florida talent, but Diaz might want to think about this approach, especially with the trench players.

Thoughts?

We do the same thing, but with basketball players. Coach’s likes the athleticism.

Wrestlers usually translate to Oline/Dline well because of hand usage and leverage.....and they do work HARD. Other positions depends because a lot of wrestlers i grew up with or knew in college were not great runners.

As for 2-sport athletes....i agree. Guys who play multiple sports are usually well rounded athletes and have more than just 1 skill and a better overall athletic profile because of the varying skillset needed for each sport. They're also not burned out on just that one sport. Far too often i see parents make kids play baseball year round, spring (typical), summer traveling team and then fall ball. Kids end up hating the sport.

Thoughts are my condolences for living even closer to that cult than the 2 hours or so that I have to

We've gone that road before - granted, not consistently, but still. Marvin Davis was a sofla kid in the 90s. National heavyweight wrestling campion - best wrestler in florida, etc, and was a complete dud in football. Ray leiws, otoh...

We used to strive to recruit 2 sport stars in football and T&F -that was a butch staple. But we seemed to have moved away from that a bit

Yet he is letting Gaige Garcia from Southern Columbia go to Michigan. Doesn’t exactly mesh with what he is saying. Pennsylvania is one of the top states for wresting & this kid is a State champ. If you live in Central PA you know Southern Columbia has been a perennial powerhouse since Hynoski. Garcia is a stud, if he was recruiting how he claims he would get him on the roster & let him compete, if he doesn't pan out as a RB at the next level switch him to defense.

That kid is setting records - on the same team as Julian Fleming as well.

Michigan is letting him play football and wrestle....which is very rare.

Im not sure if he is PSU wrestling material, but I don’t know if PSU has recruited him to play football at all. I live 45 minutes Southeast of Catawissa. Southern Columbia has been one of the best football programs in the Northeast for like the past 15 years.

Wrestling enhances strength. A wrestler is engaged for 2 or 3 minutes versus say a OL or DL for only several seconds. It also enhances balance, coordination, and endurance.
At McArthur in the late 60'a and early 70's, the wrestling HC - John Lyzotte - won 10-12 straight state championships. The irony is that he discouraged his guys from playing football. He believed playing football diminished the skills necessary to be great wrestlers.

Know Southern Columbia well. Central was our rival but southern was a close second while I was in high school.

Nice to see another person from the area, where I grew up, that’s a ‘Canes fan.

He visited but was not offered football scholarships to Penn State. I'm not sure if he was recruited for strictly wrestling or not. Cael has that program running at a level i've never seen before. He's just incredible.

One of my good friends Uncle is Pat Pecora who's the wrestling coach at University of Pittsburgh Johnstown. If you follow wrestling you know who he is. Listening to him talk about conditioning, strength and mental strength was impressive to me and I can see why you'd want to find kids like that
